CW: Religious trauma, internalized homophobia I don’t typically read romantasy. I haven’t jumped on any of the big titles, even though friends and family, including my husband, have read at least one. And yet, I had to read this one, because the author wrote my favourite book. I don’t make the rules in my brain, I just have to abide by them. I didn’t really know much going into this book except that there’s a … Continue reading The Woman From the Waves by Roslyn Sinclair →
Smart Bitches started as a review blog, and we are still going. We’ve published more than three thousand reviews since 2005, and we wanted to share some of our favorites. Choosing only a few has been really challenging, because we all have many favorites. We wanted to talk about reviews we were proud of and that we thought were memorable. I asked Amanda what reviews she thought I should include and she rattled off, like, … Continue reading Twenty Years of Smart Bitches Reviews →

When we talked about DNFing books and why, a few of y’all asked if we could talk about re-reading, which is a popular antidote to Too Many DNFs in a Row. PamG wrote in the comments: I think it would be an interesting counterpoint to the DNF question to also discuss the practice of rereading. Some people never reread a book or so they claim. Others, myself included, have whole stables of books they gleefully … Continue reading Your Top Three Re-Reads — And Why! →
I know many romance readers are also ritual re-readers, with books they re-read or seek out at different times of year. Some folks read The Hogfather every holiday season, for example. Other people re-read a specific book once a year, but the timing is more flexible, and might be whenever the mood strikes them. I think that’s so neat, both as a unique way to celebrate a book that is precious to a person, and that … Continue reading What Are Your Annual Re-Reads? →

Once again, I challenged our reviewers to pick their favorite (only one!) book they read this year. It didn’t necessarily have to be a 2022 release. I loved seeing which book they all selected and hearing about what made it so good for them. Surprisingly, there wasn’t too much hemming and hawing about selecting just one. Here are our favorites of the year! We’d also love to hear about your best read of 2022!
Tara: When this duology was announced two years ago, I was not okay. I’ve been equal parts terrified and thrilled since then, because my favourite fanfic of all time was being turned into original fiction. Could it hold up? Truth and Measure is THE definitive Mirandy (Devil Wears Prada [DWP]) fic in a still-thriving fandom. I’ve probably read it a dozen times in the last 5 years and I’ve often referenced it as one of … Continue reading Keeper Shelf: The Carlisle Series (Truth and Measure & Above All Things) by Roslyn Sinclair →

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month. Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month. We also think this … Continue reading May 2022 New Releases, Part Two →
This book is not going to be for everyone because it’s an erotic romance with a boss/employee scenario, although if that pairing is your jam, you will almost certainly love it. I totally understand and respect that not everyone is comfortable with that power dynamic in fiction. Personally, I like it, and I particularly enjoyed how this book handles it because it addresses and challenges that dynamic head on, rather than brushing past it (more … Continue reading The X Ingredient by Roslyn Sinclair →
