Investigating Lois Lane by Tim Hanley

Investigating Lois Lane

Investigating Lois Lane: The Turbulent History of the Daily Planet’s Ace Reporter is a very well written, well-researched book by Tim Hanley, who also wrote Wonder Woman Unbound. It’s a fascinating look at comic book culture, how women are depicted in comics, and what happens when a female character is written almost exclusively by men. It’s also a book that pissed me the hell off (because of what the book described, not because of any … Continue reading Investigating Lois Lane by Tim Hanley

You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day

You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost)

In her memoir, You’re Never Weird On The Internet (Almost), Felicia Day explains how being a weird person with a weird upbringing led to her weird and highly successful career as an actress, writer, and producer in the Internet world. It’s a cute, engaging memoir that sounds just like Felicia sounds in all her other endeavors – smart, self-deprecating, funny, and insecure. It’s also short and fairly superficial. Felicia shares some very personal things but … Continue reading You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day

How to Climb Mt. Blanc in a Skirt by Mick Conefrey

How to Climb Mt. Blanc in a Skirt

Oh my gosh, fellow history buffs,  clear your schedule – How To Climb Mt. Blanc in a Skirt: A Handbook for the Lady Adventurer is so much fun. This book is all about women who were explorers and adventurers, including early explorers such as Lady Hester Stanhope (1776 – 1839) and more modern women such as Jerri Nielsen (1952-2009). The author, Mick Conefrey, never defines his terms, but he seems willing to include any women who … Continue reading How to Climb Mt. Blanc in a Skirt by Mick Conefrey

Happy

Happy

Happy is a 2011 documentary that’s currently streaming on Netflix (US), Amazon Prime Instant Video, and possibly also Hulu (I haven’t been able to confirm that – if you know, please do comment). It’s one of the most thought-provoking and interesting documentaries that I’ve seen, and since I know many of you enjoy documentaries and nonfiction about the brain and the human body, I wanted to review it. My kids love a video app called … Continue reading Happy

Books on Sale: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot & More

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is $2.99! This originally started as a Kindle Daily Deal and so far, Barnes & Noble as match the price. Let’s hope a few others will join the fight! I believe Carrie has read the book and loved it; her recommendation was why I bought the book months and months ago. There seemed to be a few readers who felt the author inserted herself too much into the nonfiction narrative, but many enjoyed how the medical science in the book was written in such a relatable way. It has a 4-star rating on GR.
