Movie Review: Birds of Prey (2020)

Before we get into Birds of Prey, my experience, and what this means for moviegoers like myself, I’ll just give you the TL;DR portion of the review now. Go see it. The movie is fun, cathartic, has some amazing cinematography, and a kickass soundtrack. But there was a sadness that accompanied this movie, which occurred when I emerged from the theaters and made the dumbest decision of my life, which was logging onto Twitter. The … Continue reading Movie Review: Birds of Prey (2020)

Movie Review: The Aeronauts

The Aeronauts may not be a very good movie, but it sure is a captivating one. I was cranky going into to the movie (for reasons I’ll explain later) and cranky after the fact. During the movie, however, I was charmed. There are few flaws that can’t be masked by beautiful photography and by the combined charisma of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, both of whom looked like they needed a hug at all times. … Continue reading Movie Review: The Aeronauts

Charlie’s Angels (2019)

Charlie's Angels 2019 poster - Kristen Stewart and Ella Balinska fist bumping in front of naomi scott they are shot from below so they look tall and empowered

I saw Charlie’s Angels by myself in a theatre the Friday of opening weekend. It was absolutely delightful, and immediately upon exiting I told Amanda that she needed to see it. I also said, “If you go see Charlie’s Angels, I’m going to need you to text me when you’re done to let me know you’re okay.” Amanda: Is it good?! Sarah: I had SUCH a good time. But the amount of lesbian energy is … Continue reading Charlie’s Angels (2019)

Movie Review: Kubo and the Two Strings

Kubo and the Two Strings is, hands down, the most visually stunning animated movie I have ever seen. I love many kinds of animation and it’s foolish to try to compare them, but this movie made me gasp out loud repeatedly. The animation is unusual, detailed, gorgeous, and dreamlike, and the imagery is simply amazing. It’s also a lovely movie in terms of character, action, and emotion – but wow, is it ever dark. Kubo … Continue reading Movie Review: Kubo and the Two Strings

Movie: Electra Woman and Dyna Girl

Electra Woman & Dyna Girl film poster

Electra Woman and Dyna Girl is a movie that makes a lot more sense if you know that it originally aired as a series of online episodes, a la Dr. Horrible. In fact, it would fit quite nicely into the universe of Dr. Horrible – the two productions share the characteristics of a low budget used creatively, a cast that seems to be having a wonderful time, and the concept that superheroes and villains have … Continue reading Movie: Electra Woman and Dyna Girl

Movie Review: A Little Chaos

A Little Chaos

A Little Chaos is sort of a mess (not in a chaotic way, alas – it’s actually quite staid) but it’s a very pretty mess. Fans of historicals will love the look of the movie and the acting from Alan Rickman (who also directs) and Kate Winslet. There a couple of amazing scenes that are A+ quality and a romance that, alas, doesn’t take off, and some very pretty costumes and scenery. Kate Winslet plays … Continue reading Movie Review: A Little Chaos

Movie Review: Before We Go

Before We Go is marketed as a drama, a comedy and a romance, and it marks Chris Evan’s debut as a director. When the film opens we see Nick Vaughan (Evans) sitting on the floor at Grand Central Station, fiddling with his trumpet. No, like an actual trumpet. Get your mind out of the gutter. Brooke Dalton (Alice Eve) goes running by, dropping her phone and breaking it. She makes it to the platform, but … Continue reading Movie Review: Before We Go

Guest Squee: Song of the Sea

“Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild With a faery, hand in hand, For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.” It all began three years ago. Futzing around on Tumblr (as one does), I happened across a teaser/conceptual trailer from the Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon. Familiar as I was with their work from their very enjoyable first film The Secret of Kells, I gave it a … Continue reading Guest Squee: Song of the Sea
