The Match of the Century by Cathy Maxwell is $2.99! The heroine is betrothed to the hero’s brother, so there’s an element of a forbidden relationship happening. Readers recommend Maxwell’s writing if you like your historical romances on the lighter side. However, many felt bad for the heroine’s groom, as he was a pretty standup guy.

RECOMMENDED: The Other Daughter by Lauren Willig is $1.99! This is historical fiction with romantic elements and Redheadedgirl gave it an A:
I like Willig’s writing a lot. It’s not complex; it’s kind of like the hot chocolate of prose. It’s smooth, and it’s classic. That may sound kind of like damning with faint praise, which I’m really not trying to do. There are times when what I want is smooth prose without a lot of flourishes, and Willig always delivers.

The 1920s aren’t really my decade. I mean, they are, in the sense that I went through a period in my life where I was OBSESSED with Prohibition and the Mafia, and that lead me to the things I’ve spent most of my adult life studying, but the social history of the 1920s is not really something I’ve spent a lot of time with. Oh sure, I’ve watched Miss Fisher and I’m an avid (not … Continue reading The Other Daughter by Lauren Willig →
It Started With a Scandal by Julie Anne Long is still $1.99. This is book 10 in the Pennyroyal Green series, which is a superb historical series that mixes small town dynamics with the Regency – and two feuding families that like to score points off one another.
This book came out in March 2015, so I think this is the first time it’s been on sale. It has a 4+ star average on GR, too. I’ve read this series out of order and been fine, but hey, the whole series is pretty spiffy, and the previous 9 books before this on are available on Scribd!

I was talking about this book in recent podcasts, and was anticipating reading it because I was so curious about the setting in both location (England and Kenya) and the time period (early 1900s) – and because Willig writes lovely espionage mysteries. I expected this book to be good. It was. Sometimes my thoughts on a book don’t coalesce until days after I’ve finished it, and such was the case with The Ashford Affair. If … Continue reading The Ashford Affair by Lauren Willig →
