Get a Life, Chloe Brown saw my expectations’ proffered hand and kissed it gently, and then proceeded to charm their pants off. In a tent. With s’mores. (Not with s’mores, because s’mores apparently are not a thing in the UK.) This metaphor got away from me, but you get the idea. This book is outstanding.
This book is grounded in good detail and good characters who undergo believable and meaningful arcs, but it’s basically the warm fuzzy socks of the book world – super comfortable and comforting, completely non-demanding, and not challenging in any way.
From Bad to Cursed by Lana Harper is $1.99! Thanks to everyone for letting us know about this one. Looks like it’s a Kindle Daily Deal for today. It’s book two in The Witches of Thistle Grove series, which many of us liked!
RECOMMENDED: Battle Royal by Lucy Parker is $1.99! This is part of today’s amazing set of Kindle Daily Deals, as are all of the books featured today. Catherine gave this one an A-:
I loved Battle Royal. While it did have minor flaws, it more than made up for them with humour, tenderness, and food porn.
Despite its awkward spots, this book charmed me with food and clothes, and with the friendships, the complicated families, the glory that is Olivia Pope from Scandal, and the emphasis on female mentorship, especially but not exclusively among women of color.
Hold Me Close by Talia Hibbert is $4.99! This is a boxed set that collects books one through three in her Ravenswood series and also includes a novella. Not bad for less than $5! Thanks to everyone who let us know about this deal.
RECOMMENDED: Any Old Diamonds by K.J. Charles is 99c! New reviewer Claudia submitted this for a previous guest review and gave it an A-:
For being superbly written, evocative, intellectually stimulating, risky in the way it presents two flawed main characters, and, last but not least, sexy as all heck, this book gets an A minus from me.
At the Billionaire’s Wedding is $2.99! This book features a handful of favorite authors: Maya Rodale, Caroline Linden, Katharine Ashe, and Miranda Neville. Normally, these authors write amazing historical romances, but this a contemporary romance anthology with billionaires. My favorite story of the bunch was Linden’s “Will You Be My Wi-Fi?”
CarrieS: My super short review is, As a novel, this book is great, but as a romance novel, it’s not as good because the hero is not terribly convincing as a character. It’s interesting that we don’t get his point of view directly. That would have helped, because his character swings back and forth a lot between angel and jerk.
RHG: Yeah, it’s…. it’s kind of old school in that way? We get very little of the hero’s POV and it’s all about her. And yet decidedly neo-classic in that the trauma the heroine goes through has actual lasting consequences that aren’t fixed by magic wang.
The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty is $1.99! This is a fantasy novel that we’ve mentioned on Hide Your Wallet, a recent podcast episode, and in my local book group. It’s also recommended for fans of The Golem and the Jinni, which is a huge favorite here. Have you read it?
Duke of Desire by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. Yay! Do check out the other deals for today; there’s some nonfiction and more romance. This is the twelfth and I believe final book in the much-loved Maiden Lane series. If you’ve read it, what’d you think? A fitting end or a disappointing one?
