In this week’s podcast episode, we’re looking at the advertisements and features inside the June 2014 issue of Romantic Times, aka RT Book Reviews. We’ve got So Many Small Presses that no longer exist, plus some really, really weird feet. Yup, feet! You can also find all the RTRW content at our category page for Romantic Times Rewind. And, most importantly, if you want to listen and follow along with this entry, we have more … Continue reading Romantic Times Rewind: June 2014 Ads and Features! →
RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is $2.99! I love this series. The writing is so beautiful and I would happily send 300+ pages in the world McGuire has created. However, I will warn that these books have a haunting sadness to them and as romance readers, the HEAs we love aren’t the HEAs the characters want. (If that makes any sense without spoiling.)

Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. We did a Cover Reveal for this one, since it was such an interesting departure from Kearsley’s usual covers. Some readers felt this one was slow to start, while others loved Kearlsey’s beautiful writing. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

CW/TW: Sexual assault I’ve been a romantic suspense/mystery/thriller mood lately (Ed. note: “always”) so I was excited to read Kat Martin’s latest rom sus about a woman searching for her missing brother. At first, The Conspiracy worked okay for me; the hero was a little bit boner-led, but the action and the plot made up for that flaw. Then I got a graphic sexual assault scene that was totally unnecessary and I just noped on out. The … Continue reading The Conspiracy by Kat Martin →
Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews is $2.99! I’ve heard good things about this book and it has a mix of scifi and paranormal elements, and I really don’t know why I’m dragging my feet on reading this series. Have you read it and how does it compare to Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy?

Thinking of You by Jill Mansell is $1.99 right now. This is a contemporary romance featuring an “empty nest” heroine and reviews say it has plenty of emotion and humor. It has a 3.8-star average on GR, and while some readers say it took some time to set up the plot, once the mirrored storylines between the mother and the daughter got going, the book was charming and fun.

Blurred Lines by Lauren Layne is 99c! This is a new adult romance with a friends to lovers/friends with benefits plot. I love the way Layne writes dialogue in her romances and many readers seemed to love that in Blurred Lines. However, some felt the heroine had a “not like other girls” characterization, which was a turn off. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

A Fashionable Indulgence by KJ Charles is $2.99! Now I’m not certain that this is a sale price; I think it’s always $2.99. But I know both Charles and M/M romance is very popular! This is also a romance about class differences. Readers loved the start to a new series, though some felt the romance took a backseat to setting up the next books. It has a 4.1-star rating.

Chosen to Die by Lisa Jackson is $1.99! This is the second book in the To Die series and is a mystery/romantic suspense. Admittedly, I’m always unsure how to categorize Lisa Jackson books, so any additional comments from the Bitchery would be most helpful. The description is a little intense and the content could possibly be triggering for some readers. This is also a continuation of the first book in the series, so I wouldn’t recommend trying to read this one on its own. It has a 4.1-star rating on GR.

The Sweet Dreams Boxed Set is available for preorder for $9.99. While this is more expensive than the books we typically feature as being on sale, the proceeds go to diabetes research. The set is curated by author Brenda Novak and features thirteen romantic suspense stories. If romantic suspense isn’t your thing, there is also a set of contemporary romances – Sweet Talk [bookmention slug=”sweet-talk-boxed-set”] – and erotica – Sweet Seduction [bookmention slug=”sweet-seduction-boxed-set”]. Last year’s boxed sets generated nearly $100,000 and it would be great if we could help do it again!
