Romance author legend Julie Garwood has died at the age of 78. At the memorial online, readers are leaving hundreds of comments about how much her books meant to them, to their parents, relatives, friends. For romance readers, especially those around my age, Julie Garwood was a foundational author. I wrote about Garwood at NPR in 2015 during their “Summer of Love,” spearheaded by the late and also great Petra Mayer. Garwood’s books kept me … Continue reading Julie Garwood 1944-2023→
RECOMMENDED: A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters is $2.99! This is book one in The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series, which I remember Sarah enjoying. Here’s what she said:
This book and the next few books of the series got me through the scariest parts of early Quarantimes.
RECOMMENDED: The Bride by Julie Garwood is $1.99! This is one of my favorite historical romances and was one of my gateway reads to the genre, if you’ve listened to the What Made Us Romance Readers podcast episode. Kiki is also on a Julie Garwood kick, per out recent Whatcha Reading post.
RECOMMENDED: This Side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber is $2.99! Sarah has been a huge fan of Huber’s historical mysteries and had this to say:
If you like smart, clever, extremely competent women sleuths with a handful of secrets and a crap ton of inner resilience this is a terrific start to a mystery series. Good for fans of Huber’s other series, and of historical mysteries.
RECOMMENDED: In for a Penny by Rose Lerner is $1.99! We had a guest review for this one, where it earned a B+:
I was reading In for a Penny one evening and my husband asked me if I was coming to bed anytime soon. I made incoherent too-invested-in-my-book-for-sleep noises, and he looked at me knowingly.
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This book is much loved by historical romance readers, and has a 3.9-star average on GoodReads. Readers who love it especially like that the hero and heroine are both a bit unconventional: neither of them is superbly good-looking, a fact that has influenced their lives in several ways, and both are over thirty
RECOMMENDED: The One You Can’t Forget by Roni Loren is 99c! I love this series and highly recommend any of the books in it. However, please be warned that it deals with the aftermath of a school shooting. The first book is FREE and the third is also discounted.
Fearless in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and book four in a contemporary western series. There seemed to be some division on the heroine. Some liked her angry and prickly nature, while others thought she did too much self-sabotaging.
RECOMMENDED: Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. Queen Beverly Jenkins recommended this one on a previous podcast:
The book is amazing! It’s laugh-out-loud funny in some parts. The writing is wonderful.
