My Fair Duchess by Megan Frampton

My Fair Duchess

The difficulty of playing with the Pygmalion/My Fair Lady trope is that in its original form, it’s inherently mean. Making bets on whether you can change a person to pass for gentry, even if the author is doing it to make fun of the ridiculousness of the British class system, is still making someone the butt of a joke.  Happily, Frampton seems to understand this, and made a conscious choice not to make anyone the … Continue reading My Fair Duchess by Megan Frampton

Sweet, Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren

Sweet Filthy Boy

I’ve been slow to the Christina Lauren bandwagon. Great things have been said. Elyse has reviewed two books in the Beautiful series and seemed to relatively enjoy them. But I’m always hesitant when an author has a very large, vocal following. I don’t want to hype to influence my reading, whether it’s going in with high expectations or increased wariness, because if I happen to not enjoy a much-loved book, I have to wonder what’s … Continue reading Sweet, Filthy Boy by Christina Lauren

Frisk Me by Lauren Layne

Frisk Me

Before I start this review, I should preface it with the fact that this book deals with some sensitive issues. There is a “child in peril” story, though it’s through the hero’s memory rather than actively played out. The Devil in Denim by Melanie Scott

The Devil in Denim

Is everyone tired of hearing me talk about this book yet? I mentioned it on a previous “Whatcha Reading” and I gushed heavily on my podcast with Sarah where I talk about contemporary sports romances. Admittedly, I don’t try new authors as much as I probably should. I DON’T LIKE CHANGE! But I’m really glad I gave it a chance. I liked it. No, I loved it. So much that I actually bought it after … Continue reading The Devil in Denim by Melanie Scott

Blamed by Edie Harris

Blamed

This book was an amazingly pleasant surprise and I lost track of the number of good book noises I made while reading it. I’m still getting my feet wet when it comes to romantic suspense, but I picked a good book to try out. It opens with the heroine post-torture. So I’d definitely issue a trigger warning for violence. Later on, there are some semi-graphic descriptions of said torture. Admittedly, dropping me into the middle of … Continue reading Blamed by Edie Harris
