A New BritBox Favorite: Nigellissima!

Nigellissima poster with Nigella in a vneck black wrapped stop grating something into a pot with a smile on ehr face

Recently I needed something to watch while painting my nails and dove into the cooking section of my BritBox subscription. Obviously I can’t touch things while the lacquer is drying so it has to be something I don’t need to fast-foward or skip around in. Rural Bucolic Murder Shows are right out. The documentary and lifestyle section, however, is lovely. BritBox, which we’ve written about before, is a subscription streaming service from the BBC and … Continue reading A New BritBox Favorite: Nigellissima!

RedHeadedGirl’s Historical Kitchen: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Cooks Your Story

It’s been too hot to cook, and one thing that’s good to do when it’s really hot is to go to museums. They’re air conditioned and educational and, if you play your cards right, you can go for free! The Harvard Art Museums and the Harvard Natural History Museum/Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology are free for Massachusetts residents on Saturday (Art) and Sunday (Natural History) mornings from 9 until noon. This post is also … Continue reading RedHeadedGirl’s Historical Kitchen: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Cooks Your Story

Book Review

Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older

Shadowshaper

NB: It’s Flashback Friday! Given Sarah’s recent love of Labyrinth Lost, it seemed fitting to resurrect another YA, urban fantasy with a diverse heroine that she happened to enjoy. This review was originally published July 15, 2015. Shadowshaper is a freaking incredible novel. It’s a bit outside my reading tastes because it’s urban fantasy and it’s for teen readers, a vein of YA I haven’t read much of. But it’s also got a huge portion of my catnip because it includes … Continue reading Shadowshaper by Daniel José Older

Pie, Stuffing, Cookies, and More: What Are You Cooking?

A fork knife and spoon resting on top of a Kindle, placed on top of a light green jade glass plate on a wood table - photo by Sarah Wendell

We are an openly nosy bunch over here, and we are also usually hungry, too. So we thought we’d share what we’re cooking for the upcoming winter holiday nonstop eat-parties, and of course we want to know what you’re working on, too. Sarah: This year, as we’re preparing to move next month and are therefore going through the strange holding pattern that is showing a house, I’m not cooking Thanksgiving. But we’re not traveling or going … Continue reading Pie, Stuffing, Cookies, and More: What Are You Cooking?

The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev

The Bollywood Bride

The Bollywood Bride is Sonali Dev’s second novel. We were crazy about her first novel, A Bollywood Affair . The Bollywood Bride is more ambitious in emotional scope and much darker. It has the same joyful celebration of Indian and Indian-American culture that made Bollywood Affair so much fun – there’s a lot of food, extended family, and shopping for saris and sherwanis. Overall, though, the book works less well as a romance than it does as an … Continue reading The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev

RedHeadedGirl’s Research Kitchen: An Introduction

I go on and on about using research to add texture and layers of realism to writing, and (for me at least) that’s never more relevant than in historicals. I do historical re-enactment with the Society for Creative Anachronism which is a medieval/renaissance group, and one of the things I am the most into in the SCA is historical cooking. Sarah asked if I would be interested in doing a regular feature on historical cooking, which … Continue reading RedHeadedGirl’s Research Kitchen: An Introduction
