Hey all! It’s Wednesday Links time! I had a hectic week. My Lit Crawl Mad-Libs event with Katalina Gamarra was a wonderful success. Thank you for all who stopped by! Friday night was my partner’s birthday. You can see a full recap of the night on my Instagram, including the Princess Mononoke terrarium I made. There was a delicious dinner. I made tiramisu. A good time was had by all. I’m also going a little stir crazy … Continue reading Links: Newsletters, Art, & More →
Let’s get this out of the way – Clueless remains the best film adaptation of Emma, the novel by Jane Austen, to date, in terms of capturing the essence of the novel’s title character. Having said that, the current (2020) version offers sumptuous scenery, costuming, and staging, gorgeous cinematography, some adept historical touches, and nuanced acting. I sometimes disagreed with the film’s interpretation of Emma Woodhouse, but never with actress Anya Taylor-Joy’s actual performance, in … Continue reading Movie Review: Emma (2020) →
Yesterday was Super Tuesday. If one of your states participated, we hope you were able to go out and vote. The coverage was a bit exhausting and admittedly, I’m kind of glad it’s over for me. But I do feel bad for people who did early voting for candidates who dropped out and those who may vote later in the primaries but are disappointed by their candidates showing so far. … If you love it … Continue reading Links: Fundraising, Filmmaking, & More →
Before we get into Birds of Prey, my experience, and what this means for moviegoers like myself, I’ll just give you the TL;DR portion of the review now. Go see it. The movie is fun, cathartic, has some amazing cinematography, and a kickass soundtrack. But there was a sadness that accompanied this movie, which occurred when I emerged from the theaters and made the dumbest decision of my life, which was logging onto Twitter. The … Continue reading Movie Review: Birds of Prey (2020) →
The Aeronauts may not be a very good movie, but it sure is a captivating one. I was cranky going into to the movie (for reasons I’ll explain later) and cranky after the fact. During the movie, however, I was charmed. There are few flaws that can’t be masked by beautiful photography and by the combined charisma of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, both of whom looked like they needed a hug at all times. … Continue reading Movie Review: The Aeronauts →
After the second song of the musical Anna and the Apocalypse, my teen viewing consultant looked at me with puzzled eyes. “Mom,” she said slowly, “This is…good!” And it is. While I spent my entire first watch of this movie trying to figure out what it was, I watched it again the next day and found it weirdly affecting for a zombie musical set during Christmas in the fictional town of Little Haven, Scotland. The … Continue reading Movie Review: Anna and the Apocalypse →
It’s Wednesday and BookLovers Con is about to kick off! SBTB is here and we’d love to meet you if you see us all out and about. We also are doing a live podcast taping tomorrow. If you reserved your spot for that, it’s going to be a fantastic time! … I’m a sucker for mythology retellings in romance, so I particularly loved these recommendations by Sil over at Frolic.Media! I’ve only read one of … Continue reading Links: Tattoos, Mythology, & More →
Look for something new to watch on Netflix? Yes? Then read this squee from Darbi Bradley! You can find Darbi on Twitter (@darbibradley). She is a romance reader from Toronto, Canada currently living in Washington, DC. She hasn’t thought about moving home since November 2016. Not once… … Right at this moment, I’m on my couch in my pjs. It’s a rainy Friday night, and I’m about three-quarters of the way through a deeply mediocre … Continue reading Guest Squee: Someone Great →
Colette was a remarkable woman whose quest for freedom allowed her to accomplish great things, although it also led to her being hurt by, and hurting, many people. The movie Colette simplifies her into a woman who only needs to rid herself of a domineering husband to blossom into fabulousness. This makes for a satisfying arc with sumptuous scenery and costuming and wonderful acting, but at the cost of character complexity. The movie begins as … Continue reading Movie Review: Colette →
The Mermaid is a 2016 Chinese movie that broke a ton of box office records in China. It’s a romantic comedy about a mermaid named Shan who is supposed to seduce and kill a destructive billionaire named Xuan. Naturally Shan falls in love with Xuan (despite the fact that he has no redeeming qualities until well into the movie) so she has to persuade him instead, and they both have to fight off his evil … Continue reading Movie Review: The Mermaid →
Mary Shelley is on iTunes and Amazon, so I finally got to watch it. It’s not great. The casting is perfect but the history is inaccurate, even though the historical truth is so scandalous that it begs to be made into a movie. Seriously, any Mary Shelley movie that doesn’t show her losing her virginity to Percy Shelley on her mother’s grave is a waste of time and talent. That really happened. It’s a true … Continue reading Movie Review: Mary Shelley →
