This book is part of a series, but operates alongside another series, and they are very much connected. The first is ‘The Secret Scientists of London’ which focuses on women scientists working at Athena’s Retreat and the second, of which this is the second installment, is ‘Damsels of Discovery,’ which features women scientists not operating within Athena’s Retreat but nonetheless linked to it. I have dipped in and out of both, and it’s becoming clearer … Continue reading The Lady Sparks a Flame by Elizabeth Everett →

Happy Tuesday! It’s the last Tuesday in March and we’re closing off the month with a handful of new releases. Three-quarters of them are historicals—can you believe it?! Which books are you excited for this week? Let us know in the comments!
Welcome back to Cover Awe! Cover design by George Towne Amanda: I really love the covers for this series! The rich gem tones with interesting objects (and that little frog!) are beautiful. Sarah: I love this cover. I love the colors, I love the jewel tones, as Amanda said, I love the type treatment, and the marbled background. I could decorate a whole room based on these colors. SO lush. Sneezy: Agree! It’s also really … Continue reading Cover Awe: Flowers, Pulp Fiction, & More →

The fact that this is a debut makes me pretty excited for the next one, though, because I think that while structural issues can be frustrating, getting to the heart of characters is what we read romances for, fundamentally. And that’s done really well here.

Content warning: Discussion of a trans character who isn’t treated very well by the narrative. A Lady’s Formula for Love is a story about love, politics, science and the frustrations and difficulties of being a woman in 1840s England. It’s also a story about second chances, and reclaiming yourself after years of needing to be – or believing yourself to be – someone else. Perhaps most of all, it’s a story about claiming the right … Continue reading A Lady’s Formula for Love by Elizabeth Everett →
