Hey all! It’s been a hot minute! I’m current at a black tie wedding in Rhode Island. Now, I don’t love attending weddings, but I do love free food and an open bar. For those of you who don’t know, I have a lot of book-related jobs outside of Smart Bitches and not all of them are romance-specific. I love connecting books to readers and I feel like I do a pretty dang good job. … Continue reading Get Rec’d with Amanda – Volume 25→
If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month. Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), and we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month. We also think this … Continue reading May 2022 New Releases, Part Two→
The Most Beautiful Girl in Cuba by Chanel Cleeton is $1.99! I’m hoping this sale stays up and isn’t a leftover from yesterday. This one was mentioned in a Hide Your Wallet from last spring. Cleeton’s historical fictions have been recommended a few times on the site.
When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton is $2.99! This one features a character from the first book in this series, Next Year in Havana, but I believe you can manage this one as a standalone. If I’m wrong, though, chime in below! Here’s what Sarah had to say:
When We Left Cuba is beautiful and fascinating. Better recommendation comes from my house sitter earlier this year who very timidly asked if she could read my ARC of book three because she loves the series so so much and was so excited that a preview copy was in her vicinity.
Catherine: Yes, this feels like a C+ to me. The fact that this is a debut makes me pretty excited for the next one, though, because I think that while structural issues can be frustrating, getting to the heart of characters is what we read romances for, fundamentally. And that’s done really well here.
Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton is $2.99! This was a Reese Witherspoon book club pick and I’m so happy Reese is showing some attention to romance and romance-adjacent titles. This book has dual timelines: 2017 Miami and 1958 Havana. Have you read this one?

RECOMMENDED: Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley is $1.99! It was a previous book club pick and Sarah has great things to say about the series:
I love the whole series and it’s on my short (very short) list of books to give to friends who are grieving. Competence porn, women looking after one another, and a wonderful set of characters. And food porn too. High grade. Proceed with caution if hungry or do yourself a big gifty favor and read with snacks.
Ghosting by Tash Skilton is $3.99 at Amazon! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, but isn’t being price-matched just yet. I enjoyed this book and would describe it as Cyrano de Bergerac meets online dating. I also had writing duo Tash Skilton on my contemporary romance panel for Bookstore Romance Day.
