RECOMMENDED: Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley is $2.99! It was a previous book club pick and Sarah has great things to say about the series:
I love the whole series and it’s on my short (very short) list of books to give to friends who are grieving. Competence porn, women looking after one another, and a wonderful set of characters. And food porn too. High grade. Proceed with caution if hungry or do yourself a big gifty favor and read with snacks.
Promise of Darkness is a fantasy romance that intrigued me with its Gothic elements and excellent worldbuilding. The tone of the novel shifted midway leaving its Gothic premise behind for something more fantasy-adventure driven. While that shift felt abrupt and pulled me out of the novel momentarily, I was so invested in the plot it was fairly easy to jump back in. I will warn readers that this book ends with a HFN not a … Continue reading Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster→
RECOMMENDED: Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster is 99c! This is a steampunk romance, to which Elyse gave an A+ grade:
McMaster’s London Steampunk series is everything I want in a steampunk world–richly imagined, gritty and dark, and full of hot heroes and hot sex. Also, the hero is a cockney-accented, leather-clad, bad-boy vampire, so if Spike from Buffy gave you tingles? Yeah, go buy this book.
Everyone, there are so many good books coming out this month that it’s really quite unfair. We have over forty titles we’re excited for below, but here are a few others we know you’re all anxious to read: Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell is releasing! (My roommate splurged on a life-sized cardboard cutout of Baz, btw.) Margaret Atwood as written a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale called The Testaments. Rachel Caine continues her Great Library series with Sword and Pen . No … Continue reading September’s New Releases→
Long Shot by Kennedy Ryan is 99c! This is the first book in the Hoops series and features a basketball player hero. Basketball is a severely underrepresented sport in romance and I’m always happy to see more of it. Readers warn that there is a character background involving domestic abuse, but it’s handled very well according to reviews.
The Fifth Season is also a relatively quick read. It opens with a cataclysmic disaster and doesn’t slow down its pace. Its characters travel widely. My only word of warning is that the book ends on a massive cliffhanger. Fortunately the sequel, The Obelisk Gate, will be released in August. After finishing this book I’m making desperate grabby hands for the next one.
If you like immersive, action-driven fantasy and if you want a fantasy world that’s not Euro-centric–or if you just love a really, really good story–I cannot recommend The Fifth Season enough.
Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi is $3.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and there are some great books featured today. This book is really adorable and the cover is gorgeous. Readers loved how the friendship between the two awkward main characters unfolded. However, some readers felt the heroine, Penny, was rather unlikeable.
The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty is $1.99! This is a fantasy novel that we’ve mentioned on Hide Your Wallet, a recent podcast episode, and in my local book group. It’s also recommended for fans of The Golem and the Jinni, which is a huge favorite here. Have you read it?
Lord of Darkness by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This is book five in the Maiden Lane series, which I know is a favorite in the Bitchery. I’m up to book three and I’m enjoying it so far. I think there’s some consensus that the books can operate as standalones, but it’s best to read them in order. Would you agree?
My Lady Quicksilver by Bec McMaster is $1.99! This is the third book in the London Steampunk series. I’m not sure if it can be read as a standalone, so maybe the Bitchery can help with that question. Readers loved the world McMaster created, but some found they didn’t enjoy the main couple as much as previous books. The first book is also on sale for $1.88!
Mission: Improper by Bec McMaster is $2.99 at Amazon! This is book one in the The Blue Blood Conspiracy series, which is a spin off of McMaster’s London Steampunk series. While not completely necessary, reviewers say that readers might understand the nuances of the romance and setting more if they’ve read the London Steampunk series.
