Guest Post: That Moment When…

A colorful drawing of two cats surrounded by yummy cakes.

We have an absolutely amazing guest post from Poppy, who is recounting some of her favorite book moments! Poppy is a long-time fan of SBTB and loves cats, books and coffee, in that order. She illustrates The Loo Cats, an imaginative series starring her rescue cats in the most fantastical, improbable scenarios. The series is an ode to four spunky felines who survived abuse and abandonment before they found their forever home. Now they are … Continue reading Guest Post: That Moment When…

Midnight Blue by Simone van der Vlugt

Midnight Blue

This book moves very quickly, and while a lot happens, the plot doesn’t venture too deeply in any one direction: not into the history, not into the setting, not into the characters’ motivations. I dove into this book because it was about a Dutch widow in 1654 who travels from her very small hometown to Delft and becomes a pottery painter. Obviously, that’s exactly like Regency England and every other historical I’ve read. (Ha. Not.) … Continue reading Midnight Blue by Simone van der Vlugt

So I guess it’s officially summer (at least in the U.S.) and I’m not here for it at all. The boob sweat is eternal at this point and all I want is the sweet, chilly embrace of central A/C. Anyone else sharing in my heatwave woes? … In typical “the Smithsonian is awesome news,” they’ve created an interactive map for all of you Jane Austen fans: A look at the houses and towns that shaped … Continue reading Links: Knitting, Mermaids, & Jane Austen

It’s the last Wednesday in June and we’re inching ever closer to the Dog Days of Summer. Yuck! We hope you’re all having a great week and are looking forward to some awesome weekend plans. … The Book Club Chat is tonight at 8:00pm EDT! Because I’m a procrastinator, I started Radiance last night and almost pulled a Bad Decisions Book Club. I’m really enjoying it and I can’t wait to talk about it with everyone! … … Continue reading Links: Films, Covers, & the Victorian Era

Happy Wednesday! If you can’t tell by the title, all the links today have something to do with the Wonder Woman movie. We were sharing so many awesome things on our Slack chat, I figured we should just put them all together this week! … HelloGiggles has a bunch of photos of the Amazonian actresses. The pictures are so sweet and fun, and the women look so strong! The Amazon warriors were comprised of stunt-women, boxers, fighters, … Continue reading Links: All Things Wonder Woman

Hey all! It’s time for Wednesday Links, where we do a little roundup of some neat things we’ve seen around the internet. You ready and buckled in? … This link is from Reader Millie, and I’m pretty sure a few of you emailed me this one as well. So, thank you! I always love a good write-up of romance novels as feminist texts: “They are definitely not anti-feminist,” she argued. “These are novels written primarily … Continue reading Links: Pride & Prejudice, Bullet Journals, and Bookish Artwork!

Happy Wednesday! Cheers to getting closer to the weekend and to, hopefully, some quality reading time. Last month, Salon published a piece on how romances have changed since the 70s, and while I personally don’t agree with everything said, it’s worth a read: When I put “The Flame and the Flower” next to a romance from 2016, the most striking difference is in the heroines themselves. Forty years ago a heroine was either an orphan … Continue reading Links: The Ripped Bodice Grand Opening, Puppies, & Sex in the Ancient World

Ladies of Literature: Volume 2 by Arielle Jovellanos and Janet Sung

Ladies of Literature: Volume 2

Ladies of Literature Vol. 2 is the product of a Kickstarter I backed. I cannot remember how I came across this awesome project, but I’m pretty sure it was some perfect storm of social media. LoL (love that acronym) is a gorgeously illustrated anthology of female authors and characters from over a hundred talented artists. I’m all for supporting kickass, creative individuals who want to celebrate their love of literature, especially the female characters who’ve inspired … Continue reading Ladies of Literature: Volume 2 by Arielle Jovellanos and Janet Sung

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud

Understanding Comics

Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud totally blew my mind. This book is fun and easy to read but so incredibly helpful in showing the reader how comics work. Because the technical aspects of comics work on the reader subconsciously, I was unaware of how much difference can be made by things like the shape and spacing of a panel. This book has enriched my comic book reading life immeasurably. McCloud’s book is a Comics 101 … Continue reading Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud
