Happy March! It’s the month where I constantly refresh my bank account to see if my tax refund has shown up yet. But if you checked out today’s Hide Your Wallet, there are plenty of books to keep me entertained until the IRS stops dragging me along, like some lukewarm ex-boyfriend. … There are a couple romance author events that you may be interested in! If you live in the New England area, Alyssa Cole … Continue reading Links: Romance Events, Feminist Criticism, & Kilts →

March is here and our TBR piles are feeling the weight of all these new and awesome book releases. Sarah, Elyse, and I have books that we’re excited about, like new fantasy YA, historical romances, and erotica, but there are a few titles that we didn’t list, but you may be excited about: The Bloggess’ Jenny Lawson has a coloring book coming out called You Are Here . Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop is the fifth … Continue reading March’s New Releases →

RECOMMENDED: The Brightest Day Anthology is 99c! This is a historical romance anthology with several recommended authors. Sarah read it and gave it a B-:
Anthologies are difficult to grade sometimes. Some of the stories I found myself skimming, while with Cole’s story, I was gripping my ereader so tightly my hands started to ache. I’m giving this anthology a B- overall, averaging together the grades above.

Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole is 99c at most vendors! Carrie reviewed this book last April. Redheadedgirl also said, “Based on a rec from Courtney Milan, this is set during an apocalyptic event with a we-all-need-to-work-together and try not to go nutty from the isolation plot – it’s tight, tense, and really good.”

Welcome to Wednesday Links! It is getting very warm here in the Northeast and the underboob sweat is upon us. It’s definitely time to break out the window unit and a good book. … While I’m not a huge fan of Jennifer Aniston (in terms of her movie/TV career), I’m loving the blog she recently wrote for The Huffington Post on the media’s obsession with women’s bodies: We are complete with or without a mate, with or … Continue reading Links: Comic Con, Jennifer Aniston, & Alyssa Cole →
Before reading this, I had only heard good things about this novella. Scratch that – amazing things. So I was prepared to be either blown away or severely disappointed. Thankfully, it was the former. This book induces Good Book Noise™ something fierce. It is both deeply harrowing and one of the sweetest books I have read in a long time – and both those aspects are melded seamlessly throughout the story. The story is set … Continue reading Let It Shine by Alyssa Cole →

RECOMMENDED: Let It Shine by Alyssa Cole is 99c! This is a current DABWAHA nominee in the Novella bracket and it was Sarah’s favorite story in The Brightest Day: A Juneteenth Anthology:
OH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. SQUEE CANNON IS SET TO STUN.
It might seem that I’m predisposed to like the one story with the Jewish character, but while I do raise a glass to my own bias (L’Chaim!), the writing in this story, coupled with the coincidental present/past parallels and the balance of tension and beauty made this story worth the cost of the anthology as a whole.

Welcome back to Lightning Reviews! We’ve been knee-deep in DABWAHA chaos, but now that voting is underway, we can get back to our regularly scheduled programming. I posted about Alyssa Cole’s Be Not Afraid cover reveal in a Wednesday Links post and now we have a review! Plus a Beauty and the Beast-esque crazyness of a book and an illustrated scifi novella!

Act Like It by Lucy Parker is 99c! Sarah says, “I mean, I could squee at you some MORE beyond my review but I think you’ve heard me already. I loved this book. You should read it. It’s delightful.”

It’s been awhile since we’ve done a links post and there are already so many awesome things happening in the new year. And we’re only a month into it! Beverly Cleary is going to turn 100 this April! Yeah, that’s right. Not only does that mean it’s a great excuse to celebrate by reading some of Cleary’s books, but publishers are also re-releasing a few titles with some special forewords: Amy Poehler, Judy Blume, and Kate … Continue reading Links: Beverly Cleary, Little Free Libraries, & Reading Apps →
