Sarah asked us to think about throwback series, and I knew immediately that I wanted to discuss the Orphan Train Series by Linda Lael Miller. I remembered them VERY FONDLY from my early teenagerhood (early 1990s) and wondered how well they would hold up. I was pretty sure the answer was going to be in the realm of “not great” but it turns out, no, it’s all the way over in “VERY VERY BADLY.” In … Continue reading Lily and the Major by Linda Lael Miller →

TODAY ONLY: The Bollywood Bride by Sonali Dev is $2.99! This is a recommended contemporary romance and Dev is an auto-buy author around here. Redheadedgirl and Carrie did a joint review of the book and gave it a B+:
CarrieS: My super short review is, As a novel, this book is great, but as a romance novel, it’s not as good because the hero is not terribly convincing as a character. It’s interesting that we don’t get his point of view directly. That would have helped, because his character swings back and forth a lot between angel and jerk.
RHG: Yeah, it’s…. it’s kind of old school in that way? We get very little of the hero’s POV and it’s all about her. And yet decidedly neo-classic in that the trauma the heroine goes through has actual lasting consequences that aren’t fixed by magic wang.

About Last Night by Ruthie Knox is 99c! This book was part of the 2013 DABWAHA Tournament and was nominated for a RITA® that same year, which means we have Reader Challenge grades! However, both reviews took issue with the book’s ending.
Reader Elissa gave it a B+:
I overall loved this book. While the ending had it faults, it still made me passionately want to type all-caps emails to my friends about it, and I basically ignored my family to read it, which is always a sign of an excellent read.
Reader Jen LB gave it a C:
Grading this book was tricky for me, because I did still enjoy it quite a bit. If I had graded it before the ending, I would probably have given it a B+, but with the ending I had to downgrade to a C. It’s a good read and I wouldn’t want to dissuade anyone from enjoying it, but for me personally I couldn’t grade it higher given the icky ending.

I was really, really into it, and kept sneaking time to read it whenever I could. When it went sour, it went sour in a hurry, and I feel terrible that I'd been so excited about this book. This review is really, really … Continue reading Review: Big Sky Country by Linda Lael Miller →
