An Earl Like You by Caroline Linden

An Earl Like You

An Earl Like You by Caroline Linden is the second book in the Wagers of Sin series and features a plot where the hero is involved in deceiving the heroine in a significant way. I really struggled with this plot and with finding any empathy for the hero, and I spent a lot of the book cringing internally over the humiliation the heroine would ultimately face. This book gave me a lot of second-hand embarrassment. When … Continue reading An Earl Like You by Caroline Linden

A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

A Duke by Default

I loved A Duke by Default so freaking much. This is the second book in Alyssa Cole’s Reluctant Royals series and it focuses on Portia, the best friend of the heroine of the first book, A Princess in Theory. A Duke by Default is fine as a stand alone although characters from the first book do show up. In the first book, Portia was introduced as a party girl who couldn’t stick to anything and who frequently … Continue reading A Duke by Default by Alyssa Cole

The Governess Game by Tessa Dare

The Governess Game

I never thought I’d recommend a book because the hero grudgingly performs eulogies at doll funerals, but here we are. My life is weird sometimes. The Governess Game by Tessa Dare is so absolutely delightful that this review will consist almost entirely of squee. It will be laden with GIFs. I am basically incapable of talking about this book without my voice getting really high and squeaky. It’s like when I talk about puppies. That’s … Continue reading The Governess Game by Tessa Dare

Kiss the Sky by MK Schiller

Kiss the Sky

I first heard about Kiss the Sky at RT where the author described it as the story of two people falling in love while climbing (and surviving) K2. I’m pretty sure Amanda tweeted a photo of me one-click buying it right there. I love disaster/survival stories, especially stories set in extreme locations. I’ve read a lot of non-fiction about K2 and Everest (which is now unfortunately a literal poo disaster). I’m fascinated with the Dyatlov Pass … Continue reading Kiss the Sky by MK Schiller

Stripped by Zoey Castile

Stripped

Stripped by Zoey Castile was one of my most anticipated romances this year and it really is a perfect read for fans of Magic Mike. However, it was the wrong book for me at the time that I read it, given that I was going through some really aggravating personal stuff. Robyn Flores is a fifth grade teacher whose life is an utter shitshow at the moment. She’s constantly late for work and fate has … Continue reading Stripped by Zoey Castile

Women of the Dunes by Sarah Maine

Women of the Dunes

There’s such a wonderful feeling in discovering a new author that works for you and realizing they have this whole backlist to dive into. It’s like when you treat yourself to a fancy coffee on a frigid day and the first blast of heat and caffeine and sugar hits you, and you’re just warm and happy. That happened to me this weekend with Sarah Maine. I picked up Women of the Dunes because it featured an … Continue reading Women of the Dunes by Sarah Maine

The Mermaid by Christina Henry

The Mermaid

The Mermaid is a lyrical, dream-like story about a mermaid who falls in love with a fisherman and, many decades later, agrees to perform in P.T. Barnum’s Museum in New York City. Although this is not a romance novel, there are two love stories in the book, and I enjoyed the differences between them. I also enjoyed the relationships between women and the use of different settings to create atmospheres of claustrophobia versus expansiveness. The … Continue reading The Mermaid by Christina Henry
