This week, Sarah interviews Elyse, who reviews romantic suspense, historicals and other fun things at Smart Bitches. She also likes to outline what parts of romance novel sex scenes really tick her off. Sarah & Elyse talk about the ways in which romantic suspense has changed over the years, the differences between romantic suspense and romantic adventure, and what books she's really digging. There is also discussion of dairy farmer romance, FarmersOnly.com, what's in her conversion kit, and a brief look at those age old questions of romance, such as, When you end the Stephanie Plum series for yourself, who do you pick?
Here are the books we discuss in this podcast:
This podcast is brought to you by Berkley, publisher of #1 New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks’ all-new Surrender trilogy, starting with the explosive LETTING GO!
Josslyn found perfection once, and she knows she’ll never find it again. Now widowed, she seeks the one thing her beloved husband couldn’t give her: dominance. Lonely, searching for an outlet for her grief and wanting only a brief taste of the perfection she once enjoyed, she seeks what she’s looking for at an exclusive club that caters to people indulging in their most hedonistic fantasies. She never imagined that what she’d find would be the one man who’s long been a source of comfort—and secret longing. Her husband’s best friend.
Dash has lived in an untenable position for years: in love with his best friend’s wife but unwilling to act on that attraction. He’d never betray his best friend. And so he’s waited in the wings, offering Joss unconditional support and comfort as she works past her grief, hoping for the day when he can offer her more.
When he finds her in a club devoted to the darker edges of desire, he’s furious because he thinks she has no idea what she’s getting herself into. Until she explains in detail what it is she wants. What she needs. As realization sets in, he is gripped by fierce, unwavering determination. If she wants dominance, he is the only man who will introduce her to that world. He is the only man who will touch her, cherish her…love her. And the only man she’ll ever submit to.

I read the Kushiel trilogy about four years ago and it was really good. Another fantasy-with-awesome-world-building-and-romantic-elements series that I love is the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix.
Oh my god, I saw a Farmer’s Only as for the first time ever yesterday. The ad was so funny I started to tear up. The ad had the slogan ‘You’ll never be lonely with Farmer’s Only’. So great.
I’ve seen the FarmersOnly TV ads in LA and DC, which I find fascinating…and possibly a waste of their advertising budget.
It’s so nice to “meet” you Elyse! Another great podcast, it definitely helped my mood while walking this afternoon.
I’ve come to realize something; either my memory is very selective (and therefore I forget the horrible crazysauce books I may have read); my opinion of what is, in fact, crazysauce is way off from everyone else’s; OR I’ve managed, somehow, to avoid many of the crazysauce novels. I think it’s time I dive into the crazy end of things, if only so I can feel like I’m part of the group. LOL
Also, I am now going to tag any romantic suspense where they stop to have sex while in mortal danger (like you do) as “Danger Boner”—thanks for the new term, Elyse! 🙂
Enjoy!

boingy boingy boingy…
I’m crying here.
Also, regarding Mirror Image: isn’t it awesome how the crazy makes sense when you are sucked into Sandra Brown’s writing? The not-so-fun part is when you surface and feel the shock…
Great podcast!
This is random and far after the fact, but this is the first time I’ve listened to one of your podcasts, and I was laughing my butt off over here. Orgasm break. Priceless. And now I crave cheese.
