608. Women as Shields and Scapegoats: Talking Kate Middleton with Melissa Blue

Mel Blue was my guest when we discussed Spare – which has become one of my most listened-to episodes – so I asked her back to talk about the narratives of PR, why the weird stories around Kate Middleton grabbed attention worldwide, and why so many people were and are paying attention.

On one level it’s a story that originated in gossip about rich and powerful people in an archaic power structure being weird. But it’s also a story of misinformation, propaganda, and a complicit media system, and we deal with that over here in the US, too.

This was recorded on Wednesday, March 20, and we did a follow up this week following the announcement late Friday, March 22, that Kate Middleton is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. So there are two parts to this episode.

A few content warnings: Discussion of self harm, disordered eating, suicidal ideation, and child abuse and exploitation.

Ok, so they (KP and the Royal Rota) have been working overtime to present Kate as Posh Spice (and highlighted her amateur photography and her special interest in “the Early Years” as appropriate for her role as William’s spouse and helpmate) when they could have made her more appealing and encourage her self-confidence in her public role if they’d let her be Sporty Spice! Also, it’s odd to think that the Royal Family with Queen Elizabeth as its CEO should have been Barbie World, but evidently all of the married in wives—whether it was Diana (too much charisma/star quality), Fergie (too much chaotic muchness), Sophie (caught on tape saying the wrong things while also being too bland), Kate (too waity and too lazy), and finally Megan (too American and too inclined to take charge)—are expected to be accessories (Just Ken) or weird Barbies (but I think I want to reserve that for Camilla, who is too crafty and manipulates the press for her own benefit).

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

A great episode of the podcast that touched on so many things beyond how the royal propaganda media machine supports a classist/racist/misogynistic system (side note: are we surprised that much of Britain’s tabloid media is run by the same company that runs Fox News?). I could have listened to Sarah & Melissa talking for another hour about these interconnected topics. As E. M. Forster said, “Only connect!”

  3. @SB Sarah says:

Wow, thank you, DiscoDollyDeb! That’s a really lovely compliment.

And YES Ellyn, that’s very true. Enforced and rigid concepts of femininity are so damaging.

  4. Vesta says:

One of the things I found fascinating was that when the Russian/Chinese bot accounts were blocked on FB/IG… suddenly the anti-Meghan propaganda TANKED.

Both of those countries are, in fact, vastly interested in the UK royals. For political destabilization reasons.

  5. AMG says:

I pinned this to my podcast board on Pinterest and within minutes, they had removed it for being ‘misleading community content’. You got shelved with conspiracy theorists…

  6. One of the Ms. M's says:

@Ellyn That’s an interesting point about Kate being cast as Posh when she’s really Sporty. People used to say the same thing about Jackie Kennedy (well– hat & gloves vs relaxed on a boat, but you get the idea).

  7. Msb says:

Very good title for the episode. Wish there had been more about scapegoating. Both the podcast and some comments seem to require a “Wicked Witch” (Camilla?)whenever the wrongs of princesses are discussed. Why is a female villain preferred, especially when there’s an older woman on the stage? The mobs of photographers and the editors of the tabloids are mostly men.
Thanks for the reference to the discussion of Spare, which was very insightful.

  8. Katrine says:

I’m actually majorly disappointed in this podcast. You say that you empathize with her that she has cancer and you still drag her through the mud at the expense of others. Oh also say that there is no way that Russian/chinese disinformation campaigns target royals and yet it’s been proven by intelligence services that ANYTHING that provides clicks in the public media and social media is fair game for these bot farms, many of whom are Russian/chinese origin (its even part of official Russian information wars strategy). Therefore, for a podcast I used to listen to ardently, I’m very much disappointed that you turned out to seem to be hateful and a mean girl, frankly.

  9. @SB Sarah says:

    @Katrine:

Can you tell me where I dragged someone through the mud? I was pretty clear, and so was Melissa, that our issue was the truly inept handling of the entire situation from Kensington Palace, and that Kate has been treated terribly by the people who are supposed to be supporting her. Sure, bot farms and those invested in misinformation campaigns Probably did boost the mayhem, but the problems started with Kensington Palace and the agreement they have with the British media.

I’m really confused how a critique of a complicit media and a governmental institution invested in mutual propaganda makes me a mean girl. But I’ve been called worse, so ok. If my show isn’t for you, that’s okay, too. Thanks for listening!
