602. Foundations of Fantasy Romance with Jennifer L. Armentrout

Visions of Flesh and Blood
A | BN | K
Jennifer L. Armentrout joins me to talk about the books she considers the foundation of her fantasy romance reading, and what classical historical romances she adores. Her newest book, Visions of Flesh and Blood is out next week, so we’re looking forward, and back – and way, way back in the past.

We talk about a series she’s paused, and why, and what it means to update a book that doesn’t ‘age well.’

What fantasy or historical romances were foundational reading for you? I’d love to know which are your favorites!

  1. ReadKnitSnark says:

SB Sarah, the extra problematic Johanna Lindsey title you couldn’t recall is SECRET FIRE. I would have yelled it at the speaker but I was at work and there were other people about…

I haven’t reread a JL in over a decade. (I haven’t had access to my treasured, painstakingly collected paperbacks in a while, and reading them digitally just doesn’t seem to hit the spot in that I’m-reading-old-skool-crack way.)(If I’m not trying to hide the cover from theoretical other people, am I even reading a Johanna Lindsey?) I’m not claiming it’s my absolute favorite, but I have delighted memories about WARRIOR’S WOMAN. I really liked how her futuristic home acted like a room of requirement!

  2. Kareni says:

Thank you, Sarah and Jennifer, for sharing your conversation.

    I read a lot of romances back in the day with paranormal content. A few titles I remember are Gift of Gold (1988) and Gift of Fire (1989) by Jayne Ann Krentz;
Dream Walker (1989) by Jacqueline Marten; and Now You See Her (1998) by Linda Howard. I remember that some category romances also had paranormal content such as ghosts or reincarnation.

  3. Anne-Maree says:

I used to read Rosemary Rogers as a teen.

  4. Elizabeth says:

As a teen, I didn’t read much romance but I did seek out fantasy romance; any little bit of romance in the plot would hook me (and just a little bit is what it usually was). One standout was Patricia McKillip’s Riddle Master trilogy; the first book is the male protagonist’s POV, the second book the woman’s, the third book together. Their relationship and his respect for her shape the plot and its possibilities in a way that I didn’t often encounter in fantasy. Notably, also, all those popular novel-length fairy tale retellings are fantasy romances; I think they started getting popular in the early 1990s, and they haven’t really gone away since.

  5. Stefanie Magura says:

This might be complicated, so I hope it makes sense. I somehow have an old version of the podcast feed which includes all 603 episodes. It is one which I wanted to keep around because I sometimes like listening to much older episodes, and the current version of the feed only contains about 200 episodes. Not only that, but there are some early episodes on there, and some much later ones leading up to the current ones, and a big gap in between. This is true whether someone subscribes on Audible, iTunes, spotify, or any place which hosts podcasts and finds the podcast through a search. Anyway, on this older feed I cannot play episode 602, but I can play all episodes going back to the first one, or it seems that way anyway. I have tried playing a few episodes, and have not had this issue. I didn’t have this issue with episode 603 either. Is it possible you could either fix the current feed so it has all the episodes, or fix it so that episode 602 can be played on the other one? If not, I’m fine with an explanation of what’s happening, if you have one. I kind of waited to comment, because I hoped this would resolve itself. The feed I have been using is this one. https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/https://access.acast.com/rss/62a7849004bdd200117465f3/H3XyJ9E1feed/podcast/

  6. Stefanie Magura says:

Also. I think some podcast reviews are on this previous version/podcast page. I do see them when I am subscribed in Apple podcasts. I also have another question. Instead of doing what I previously asked, could it be possible to merge these two feeds?
