490. Sweet Dreams Romance Recap: California Girl by Janet Quin-Harkin

It’s time to recap Sweet Dreams #6, California Girl by Janet Quin-Harkin, also known as Rhys Bowen! Jennie is a swimmer with her eyes on the Olympics, and Mark is a grumpy loner on crutches who sketches Jennie one day in the cafeteria. We’ve got:

  • Overbearing sports parents
  • Snark about Texas drivers
  • Homesickness
  • Lots and lots of swimming
  • Learning to set boundaries
  • Dreamy grumpy artist hero!

Alas, CW/TW for ableist language and anti-fat bias in the book, which is very lightly skimmed over in the episode.

I just want to share that you’re right! Sometimes athletes do defer for a year or semester because of the Olympics (like Vincent Zhou)! Others don’t (Nathan Chen, for example). And Nationals are kinda trial runs for the Olympics but also like!! Why wouldn’t you take the story there?! SWEET FANTA CLAUS.

  2. Jen M. says:

I didn’t read these, so haven’t been listening to this series. But Janet Quin-Harkin also wrote my favorite books in the Love Stories series, which was my jam. I only discovered that JQ-H = Rhys Bowen a couple of months ago, and my mind was blown!

  3. Kate says:

Maybe it was different 40 years ago but now Texas is one of the top competitive swimming states with the UT Austin program regularly producing Olympians.

  4. @SB Sarah says:

@Kate: I bet the swim program success there is all due to Tod. /Sarcasm

  5. Kara says:

Texas Homecoming Mums are A THING. Yes, they’re massive. I do not live in Texas. I grew up in Massachusetts, in a town where soccer was king, not football. So, homecoming just was a dance and a football game, that we usually lost. But I have relatives in Texas. And I’ve seen pictures of Homecoming Mums. Just image search. Your mind will be blown.

  6. denise says:

I thought I left a comment the other day. But, the holidays have been playing tricks on me. Regardless, I looked up the mum corsages. Whoo-hoo! They have a Texas-size price tag to go with them.
