273. Sex Toys, Self Love, and Erotic Romance: A Very Bawdy Podcast with Thien-Kim Lam

Grab your earbuds for this one. Nancy C suggested this interview in the comments to a recent episodes, and I’d been eager to set one up as well because, well, several reasons. Today I’m talking with Thien-Kim Lam, founder and owner of the Bawdy Bookworms subscription box service, which pairs erotic romance with sex toys and accessories. Thien-Kim recently attended a trade show all about sex toys in Vermont, and brought samples and new products to show me. So while we’re talking about sex positivity, toys, accessories, and general bawdiness, we also do some show and tell. Do not worry, I have pictures! You don’t want to miss the unicorn part. There are a number of unintentional puns, a lot of discussion of misinformation about sexuality and intimacy, and a lot of toys to talk about.

Thien-Kim is always looking for erotic romances to feature in her subscription box – which is a wonderful gift, by the way. I will have links to Bawdy Bookworms and everything else we discuss, of course.

The contents of the Fireworks to Go kit include a small ring, a mini vibrator, assorted gels and lubes, in a clear plastic case that is of course TSA friendly!
The Cheeky vibe in its very classy box

And finally, if you’re curious about the pheromone collar for anxiety that Buzz the Anxious wears, it’s the Adaptil DAP Pheromone Collar – and despite thinking it would never work, I very much recommend it. So does Buzz.

It’s a contemporary Male/Male romance, part of the Dreamspun Desires line, where the men are hot, the romance rockin’ and there is always a happily ever after.

A billionaire and a Bedouin girl— each with a shocking secret.

Ikraam din Abdel was raised as a woman by his avaricious older sister, who didn’t want him being their father’s heir. He’s never thought he’d be married and is surprised when his sister informs him of his betrothal.

When Fathi and Ikraam meet, they’re drawn to each other in a manner neither one of them expected. As the plans for their wedding progress, they both realize they need to tell the other the truth. But can they, with both cultural taboos and family pressures to deal with?

On Loriah, there are but a few rare children born every generation, each one gifted with exceptional abilities. When a hostile army, the Raide, threatens these children with annihilation, the Loriahans whisk them away to Earth where they hide in plain sight among people who know nothing of their existence.

Years later and after countless battles on Loriah, defeat by the Raide seems inevitable. A band of elite scouts is sent to Earth to return The Taken to their birthplace and turn the tide of war. But, these scouts are not alone. The enemy has learned of these “secret weapons.”

Raised as humans with talents and gifts they can’t explain, The Taken hold Loriah’s fate in their hands. It’s the scouts’ mission to ensure The Taken cooperate, but in the case of three special women, even the simplest of plans get complicated.

How do you convince these women to sacrifice everything for a world they don’t remember? The answer lies in the hearts of the three men sent to protect them.

Be taken to a world filled with love, lust and an enticing dose of magic that keeps readers clenching their teeth in anticipation.

  1. *snicker* The lack of comments on this episode is noticeable. Since I have no fucks left to give and my give-a-shit is broken, I don’t mind attaching my username to this episode to comment. (Hey, I understand. Around five years ago I would not have commented as my give-a-shit still worked and I had fucks left to give.) Anyway…

Thank you ladies. Entertaining and educational, as always.

  2. Lindsey says:

What a fun episode! I can’t see myself subscribing to Bawdy Bookworms – I prefer reading erotica digitally and I’m pretty picky about sex toys – but the idea is awesome and I definitely appreciate Lam’s recommendations. The unihorn is amazing. The only unicorn shifter romance I’ve read was Susan Krinard’s Lord of Legends, which I seem to remember liking because it’s historical and I’m a big unicorn fan, but I don’t think it would qualify as erotica. Anyway, I love the way you both talk about women’s pleasure. It really is a conversation more people need to have. It kills me knowing there are so many women who have never experienced an orgasm!

  3. Ren Benton says:

Like, what, is she wearing I’m a Submissive perfume?

    She has submissive pheromones, obviously!

I like the condom mention, too, because I know how many people still, in 2017, never use condoms. Never. Never ever. Which is horrifying, and I like fictional people to be less revoltingly irresponsible than real people.

@ms bookjunkie: I was just waiting for the transcript! My auditory comprehension is so fucked up, I almost get vertigo when I try to listen to recorded speech. Vibrating horns + loss of balance = “You’ll put your eye out!”

  4. Trix says:

I just finished Hallie Lieberman’s BUZZ, so this is crazily appropriate. (The author started as a home party sales agent too, and details the trickiness involved in having to promote toys where she could be prosecuted for it. It’s a riveting book, by the way, even though the repeated “lie/lay” misuses stunned me coming from a Ph.D. That said, the research is great, and there are some really heartening moments here and there. I learned about Gosnell Duncan, inventor of the silicone dildo, who is AWESOME [I think/hope he’s still alive, though elderly now]: a disabled, immigrant person of color motivated purely by the wish to bring people joy. My new hero!) I wish the box had a Split Peaches Unicorn Horn and Tali Spencer’s THICK AS THIEVES (a hilarious m/m historical that’s the PERFECT tie-in, trust me) instead, but that’s just me…

  5. Trix says:

I guess technically THICK AS THIEVES is fantasy? Thanksgiving’s making me dotty…

  6. Sarah says:

I know of one Unicorn erotic novel called Horn of the Unicorn by Rhyannon Byrd its pretty bad I never finished it but there it is if ya want to check it out. I want that unicorn vibrator it is totes adorbs. I must point scientists have yet to identify any human pheromones. So pheromone based perfumes are bullshit marketing schemes. One Scientific America article I read said most of them contain pig pheromones so watch out if you live on a farm!

  7. Sarah says:

My school showed us the pancake batter video! It was ridiculous.
