106. An Interview with Ilona Andrews

After technical difficulties with a recording with Jane (DARN IT), I asked on Twitter if anyone would like to tell me about what they're reading for this week's podcast.

So please meet Ilona Andrews, NYT best selling author, who wants to tell us about a barbarian romance she read, written under a pen name that she didn't recognize. Then we talk about her favorite authors, Harlequin Presents, fantasy, and more, including the scientific problems with rabid badgers.

It might get expensive, is what I'm saying here.

So a big huge thank you to Ilona Andrews for doing an impromptu but very fun interview. I hope you all enjoy it.

Here are the books we discuss in this episode:

Night Shift - anthology Susan Napier - Harlequin Presents Blue Sword - Robin McKinley

the lost fleet Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief Jeannie Lin - butterfly swords

Fortune's pawn - Rachel Bach tanya huff- fortune's emporium

The Affair by Beth Kery This podcast is brought to you by InterMix, publisher of THE AFFAIR—the brand-new, red-hot e-serial from New York Times bestselling author Beth Kery.

A young woman’s quiet life is upended when she meets the man of her forbidden dreams in the startling new novel from New York Times bestselling author Beth Kery.

The Affair begins…

The Affair Week One Innocent yet unconventional hospice nurse Emma Shore has secured a new position at The Breakers, the sprawling mansion of enigmatic and dangerously handsome racecar billionaire Michael Montand.

Hired as caretaker for Montand’s stepmother, Emma expects few complications. But one night, lost in the mansion’s maze of corridors, she comes upon a woman and a man she can’t identify engaged in a raw, naked interlude of sexual subjugation. Silently, from the shadows, Emma watches—shocked, appalled, and unnervingly aroused.

But Emma wonders… if this mysterious stranger is not Montand, then who is it? And what other surprises are in store for her? Night after sleepless night, she’s considering the possibilities. And for the first time in her life, she’s not going to run away from them.

  1. Loni says:

Eight minutes in and it’s already awesome!
Plus Ilona has the best accent.

  2. CG says:

OMG Barbarian Romance and Ilona Andrews!f?  *waits impatiently for transcript*

  3. SB Sarah says:

    @CG:

    Transcript coming, I promise!

  4. Christine says:

I just got happy about having to drive across town later….!

  5. Rinda says:

This was so much fun. I already owned Fortune’s Pawn and am now excited to start it. Also checking out some authors mentioned, so cool. 😉

  6. leslie says:

I have a book hangover. My son and I just listened too Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy…..really really recommend the print version and the audio book….there is a cast of readers and Pullman is the narrator. We were so engrossed it entered our dreams.

I recommend Kate Forsyth’s Bitter Greens and her Witches of Elineann series. Great fantasy for YA readers and adults too.

  7. Chris says:

    Ilona is so funny!

The blue sword is an amazing book! One of my favorites.

  8. Hanna says:

First time ever hearing her accent. Soooooo cute. And amazing as always. I had to close my office door and try not to choke on my lunch or snort coffee out my nose. 😀 Can’t wait for Burn for Me. Great podcast!

  9. sharona says:

Love Ilona Andrews, she is such an amazing storyteller……could listen to her forever!!! And oooh, military sci-fi recommendation, going to get it now!

  10. Robin McKinley, Tanya Huff (new Gale family book, nice ^^) – YAY! I wish I could get both of you to read Andrea Höst’s Touchstone trilogy… I’d love a discussion about that. Oh well.

Also, Sarah, you have so many great fantasies or sf books ^^ with romantic subplots to discover.

By the way, Hero and the Crown, is also a Damar book and tells the life story of Aerin who appeared to the heroine of the Blue Sword (so is basically a prequel).

  11. Margaret Shelley says:

Tanya Huff’s book “Silvered” is amazing. It is not part of a series. Have read, loved, and possess the Blue Sword & Hero and the Crown since 1982.

I would also recommend a fantasy novel, “the Goblin Emperor” by Katherine Addison.  Not a romance per se, but incredible writing.

  12. Storyphile says:

    Yay Ilona!!

Reading Rachel Bach’s Paradox series right now.  Haven’t finished it yet, but enjoying it so far.

I love all of Tanya Huff’s books.  If you want to read the space marine series Ilona was talking about, those are the Confederation novels.  They all have Valor somewhere in the name, but Ilona is right that those books are pretty serious and the romantic elements are lighter than in many of Tanya’s other books.  In my head I classify them as military sci-fi, rather than space opera; if I recall correctly, the first book is even directly based on a battle from the Boer wars.

I agree “Silvered” is a great stand-alone fantasy, and the urban fantasy Gale series is a lot of fun – eager for the third one!!  Both have a higher romance content than the Confederation series.  But I’m happy to read (or re-read) all of Huff’s work, depending on my mood!

Also love everything by Robin McKinley.

Thank goodness I own a lot of the books in your discussion already, or this would be getting really expensive for me… I have to go look at Jeannie Lin now…

  13. Cute interview. I love Tanya Huff and Robin McKinley too! (And Ilona, of course.)

  14. roserita says:

Just finished the latest episode in the Innkeeper Chronicles.  I wish she wrote faster, but delayed gratification is supposed to be character building.  Right?

  15. Judy W. says:

Sarah,  If you like the mentioned Robin Mckinley fantasy you should read her vampire book (very different kind of vampire) “Sunshine”.  I loved it. I wasn’t thrilled with the authors reaction to rabid fans who keep bugging her for a sequel (It’s that good) but the story was wonderful.  And yes it cries out to continue but alas no.

  16. Yay my library has Fortune’s Pawn in ebook. I’ll add it to my wish list.

  17. Elizabeth Lyn Barbee says:

I’ve always like Ilona Andrews, but it was great to hear her and find out she’s just as fun and crazy as I always suspected she was.

  18. SB Sarah says:

You all have lengthened my reading list and hold list at the library CONSIDERABLY. Thank you!!

  19. SB Sarah says:

@CG – transcript is up! Podcast Transcript 106: An Interview with Ilona Andrews http://bit.ly/1peg3U2

  20. Make Kay says:

omg, this was epic!  I love Ilona’s accent.
And Sarah, so not how I pictured your voice.  This is the first podcast of yours I’ve listened to, purely because Ilona was on it, and now I’m hooked.  I’ll be listening to these in the future!!

  21. elianara says:

Great episode! I have to check out that barbarian romance and see if I find that Robin McKinley at the library.

To answer your last question, I download the mp3 from the RSS feed and listen to the podcast on my phone while I’m out and about, either biking, running or working.

  22. Claudette says:

Love getting the chance to hear the voice of one of my fave authors.  Love Ilona Andrews.

  23. Sarah says:

Everything by Robin McKinley is wonderful! The prequel to The Blue Sword is the Hero and the Crown which I reread about every year and explains a lot that happens in The Blue Sword.

  24. Mac says:

Ugh. I hate it when I want to get audio/video with my slow-as-dial-up-like connection and I can’t even download. 3rd world problems. 🙁

  25. LaineyT says:

“Yup…go ahead and mount her!”  Hahahahahaha!!!!!

  26. lagu gratis says:

i listened music in each episode is provided by Sassy Outwater. This is a song called “Mackerel & Tatties” by Michael McGoldrick from his album, Aurora. i’m not impress about this .

  27. @SB Sarah says:

    @lagu gratis:

Yes, that’s correct. Sassy is a music producer and secured permissions for all the music and artists we feature. In most cases, she’s been involved in the production of the album from which the songs are taken. I mention the artist and title in the outro portion of each episode, and certainly don’t want to avoid giving credit to the musician.

  28. Sassy is still charismatic song with me. I still like to listen to this song.
