Finally, finally it’s the season finale of the snooze fest that is this season’s Bachelor. Unfortunately it’s three hours long, and I don’t even know how the hell they got three hours of usable footage of Arie. Allegedly there’s a big scandal because Arie regrets his choice. The Bitches and I discussed earlier: RHG: You’d think a piece of beige carpeting wouldn’t have so much trouble. Sarah: Who was it that called him a beige pashmina come to … Continue reading Elyse Watches The Bachelor Episode 11: An Apple and a Starfish →

The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher is $1.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! I had mixed feelings on this one. I loved listening to it on audio, though I did tear up at times since I listed to it following Carrie’s death. However, the book exclusively deals with Carrie’s experiences on the set of Star Wars and I wanted more of a broader scope.

We’re back with more Cover Awe, where we discuss covers that make us take notice. This “gold” theme was completely unplanned, but we noticed that several of the covers we were loving at SBTB HQ had golden elements. Amanda: I love the colors on this. Sarah: That is actually glowing. If I had transition lenses, i’d be wearing sunglasses now Elyse: Oh! I love warm colors like this. This makes my eyes so happy. CarrieS: … Continue reading Cover Awe: Going for Gold →

Wonder Women by Sam Maggs is $1.99! I was really taken by the adorable cover when I first saw it, and awesome women in history is definitely on brand for SBTB. There are over sixty women discussed in this book and many readers noted that they only heard of a small portion. The book does feature some illustrations, though, and I’m not sure how they’d translate digitally.

Hey there! We have some fresh and tasty Lightning Reviews ready for you! There’s a mystery set in Antarctica and a YA fantasy with a warrior heroine. Plus, a dive into Kristen Callihan’s backlist.
The Last Namsara is a YA epic fantasy that I think will appeal to a lot of readers, including those who are a little leery of the genre. First of all, there’s no cliffhanger ending. We get full resolution, although I can certainly see the book being part of a larger series. There’s also a romance, but no love triangle. Add to that a completely badass warrior heroine, a forbidden love story, dragons, and storytelling … Continue reading The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli →
I’m a huge fan of Kristen Callihan’s contemporary romances. So when I saw Firelight sitting on the shelf at my local library right before I left for a reading retreat, I just knew it was fate. And hot damn, why did I wait so long to start The Darkest London series? Normally, I don’t reach for historical romances. But with the added elements of magic, curses, and demons, it felt like a decent compromise for a … Continue reading Firelight by Kristen Callihan →
Out of the Ice by Ann Turner is a deliciously creepy mystery set in Antarctica, and while I loved the first 80% of the book, I found the ending to be a little compressed and unbelievable. That said, it was enjoyable and chilling enough that it made for a Bad Decisions Book Club moment and I stayed up finishing it until 1:45 a.m. Laura Alvarado is an environmental scientist stationed in Antarctica. She’s selected to … Continue reading Out of the Ice by Ann Turner →
Falling for Trouble is a small town romance between a rock star and a librarian. I found it to be light as a feather, which was great because I was too stressed at the time to handle any high angst levels, even with the promise of an HEA. If you need a comfort read that is funny, big on female friendship, and mostly angst-free without being dumbed down, this book should do the trick. Joanna … Continue reading Falling for Trouble by Sarah Title →

It’s time for our March Book Club pick, and I am really excited for this one. This month, we’re reading A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle. While the book was published in 1962 and is a much-loved classic, the new film version directed by Ava Duvernay comes out on March 7. So at the end of the month, we’ll be discussing both the book and the film, if you can make time to both read … Continue reading Smart Bitches Book Club March Selection: A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle →
