Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.

Happy Wednesday! The Northeast is due for another snowstorm and I was woken up by my cat biting me this morning. Is anyone else having the same crappy day? Anyway, here are some links to calm you down or to channel your rage! … I was glued to the Twitter mystery of Candace Jean Andersen trying to track down a woman of color who attended the 1971 International Conference on the Biology of Whales. Give … Continue reading Links: Muses, Tom Hiddleston, and More

Torn by Rowenna Miller

Torn

Torn has a great concept and fantastic descriptions of locations and clothing. It has a heroine of color (she’s described as having black hair and “golden skin”). It has intrigue. It has action and romance. Alas, it does NOT have momentum. This book is a fantasy that takes place in an alternate world. The country our heroine Sophie lives in is similar to Russia right before the 1917 revolution. Sophie is a seamstress who owns … Continue reading Torn by Rowenna Miller

HaBO: Treehouse on a Tropical Island

This HaBO comes from Claire, who is hoping to find this older contemporary romance: I am looking for a book that I read as a teenager around 2003. I am pretty sure the book was older than that. The book starts with the heroine getting away from work on an overdue vacation, maybe in Hawaii? She gets on a boat that goes way out to sea, and something happens to the boat: fire or explosion. … Continue reading HaBO: Treehouse on a Tropical Island

Books on Sale: Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare & More

Goddess of the Hunt by Tessa Dare is $1.99! If you like historical romances with house parties, this book was mentioned in the comments of a Rec League post. Sarah gave this a C, citing difficulties with the heroine:

I loved everything except the heroine, Lucy. And despite my joy at discovering such elegant and delicious writing, and a collection of characters I eagerly pursued through the pages of the novel, Lucy’s complete idiocy, stubbornness, and determination to ruin herself in the eyes of society and in the eyes of the reader made it impossible for me to truly enjoy the book as much as I wanted. Because of her, the grade dropped bit by bit until the skill of the writing and the joy of the other characters were at outright war with my snarls at Lucy.

HaBO: MMA Hero Doesn’t Love the Heroine’s Pie

This HaBO request is from Simmi, who wants to find a romance that’s part of a sought after series. Trigger warning for the description below: I’ve been watching the Bitchery work its magic and help people find their long lost book-loves for years now, so when I realized that there was a book I wanted to reread, but couldn’t remember the title. The book I wanted help with is actually part of a series. I … Continue reading HaBO: MMA Hero Doesn’t Love the Heroine’s Pie

The Darkling Bride by Laura Andersen

The Darkling Bride

I love gothic mysteries and gothic romance. When I was a teen I found a whole shelf of Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney in our basement and devoured them. When I’d finished them, my mom gave me historical romances to read. Gothics were my gateway drug. The Darkling Bride is a gothic mystery set in Ireland with the requisite crumbling castles, ghosts, and family secrets. It also features a side romance. I found the mystery … Continue reading The Darkling Bride by Laura Andersen

Books on Sale: Tougher in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell & More

Tougher in Texas by Kari Lynn Dell is $1.99! This is the third book in the Texas Rodeo series, though it can be read as a standalone. I’ve read the book before this one and I enjoyed Dell’s writing. She captures emotion really well, and I’m not usually a huge fan of cowboys!

The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert

The Princess Trap

The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert made me feel really good. It was the read I needed for a crappy day and it went down like a hot cup of tea followed by a cookie. The pacing was a little off at the end, but my appreciation for an emotionally-fluent hero let me overlook that. Also the heroine wears a Dolly Parton tee shirt to bed and fuck yea, Dolly Parton. I do want to add … Continue reading The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert

Caption that Cover: Doomsday Hipsters

Sky's the Limit by Elle Aycart. A bearded man is holding up a pair of legs. Hopefully those those legs are attached to a body, but all we see are legs in jeans with a sparkly pair of heels. There's also the words doomsday preppers on the cover.

We’re resurrecting an older feature: Caption that Cover! You can see previous examples here and here, if you’re new to the site. Captioning is similar to Cover Snark, but instead of snarking, we want the Bitchery to really get to the WTF-heart of what’s going on. Here is our first contender: There are so many little things that, when put together, make no sense! What’s the top half of the woman doing? Where the heck … Continue reading Caption that Cover: Doomsday Hipsters
