The Liar of Red Valley is kind of awesome, despite an abrupt ending and some world-building issues. This is a book of suburban/rural fantasy in which a young woman has to make some desperate choices to save her own life and the life of her small town. Here is the publisher’s description of what is, frankly, a fairly confusing plot: Don’t trust the Liar. Do not cross the King. Never, ever go in the River. … Continue reading The Liar of Red Valley by Walter Goodwater →

RECOMMEND: Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert is $2.99! That might be the regular price for this paranormal romance novella. Elyse loved this one and gave it an A:
Overall this book was a delight. It locked on to my need for female rage, for men to support that rage, and for cupcakes, and it was funny.

This HaBO is from Jill-Marie, who is looking for this audiobook: Dog Dammit! I was just listening to this series on Audible, but now I can’t find the third book; all my history searches bring up nothing (again, DOG DAMMIT!). Basically, there are two titled and now-happily married blokes and their (also happy) wives who have a friend(s) who are also married but NOT communicating. The series is fairly recent. The first two men find … Continue reading HaBO: Possible Gilded Age Married Couple is Estranged →
TW: Gore, gaslighting, controlling relationships, codependency and depression, vomiting. Also SO MANY SPIDERS. Cackle is a feminist and creepy yet cosy read that asks us to explore the boundaries between an empowering friendship and a toxic one. Annie (our protagonist) finds some of both in her relationship with Sophie, a glamorous, elegant, mysterious woman, who lives in the small town of Rowan. This book is narrated by Annie. She has lived in New York City … Continue reading Cackle by Rachel Harrison →

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo is $1.99!This is a mixture of historical fiction, fantasy, and romance. The Ghost Bride. It’s also been made into a Netflix adaptation that I’m super curious about! It’s a new season of The Bachelorette and I’m here to see what fresh WTFery is in store. This season’s Bachelorette is Michelle Young, a teacher from Minnesota. Once again Tayshia and Kaitlyn are hosting, replacing Chris Harrison. Once again my sassy, 15 year old Siamese, Pudding, is here to be unimpressed. It’s definitely a No Bones Day, and I’m still recovering from traveling for several days, so I’m forgoing an adult beverage for a bottle … Continue reading Elyse Watches The Bachelorette–S18 E1: Fresh WTFery →

RECOMMENDED: A Stitch in Time by Kelley Armstrong is 99c! Ellen read this one and gave it a B:
If you like time travel or gothic romance I think there’s a lot to like here. However, gothic romance fans should note that romance itself is fairly sweet and light and the gothic elements are more embedded in the various ghost and murder subplots.
