Hoo boy, was this book a mixed bag. Here are my main takeaways for potential readers, sorted into the good, the bad, and the meh: The good: The premise and world-building are intriguing and fun once things get going, and the third-act action is genuinely a nail-biter (after an otherwise slow-ish plot). There are several very engaging lady secondary characters of supernatural origin. Also, most of the major secondary characters are queer. Finally, I love … Continue reading Shadow of the Swan by Nicola M. Cameron →

Dragon Unleashed by Grace Draven is $1.99! This is the second in the Fallen Empire series and I gave it a B-. You can read my review here. My general thoughts are Draven’s world building is lovely, but wow there is a lot of sexual violence or threats thereof. The main villain is also a hyper-sexual woman, which gives me pause.

This HaBO comes from Regina, who is looking for this paranormal romance: I’m searching for a paranormal romance book I read a few years ago ( I thought it was a Kresley Cole or Gena Showalter but no such luck—but probably in a similar vein). I remember some specific details, so hopefully you can find it! The book starts off with the main girl getting attacked by a group of men, this leads her to … Continue reading HaBO: Paranormal Warriors Fight for Her Hand in Marriage →
You know how sometimes you pick up a book because it looks like fun, and then it turns out to be clever and funny and tender and tropey and still somehow unique, and you read it all in one sitting and hop straight onto the Kobo site after midnight to order the previous book in the series? Yeah, that was A Most Unusual Duke for me. This story worked so, so well for me. It’s … Continue reading A Most Unusual Duke by Susanna Allen →

Welcome back, all! Are you ready for more recommendations? For a refresher, I have many book-related jobs from freelance reviewing to events planning and bookselling at an independent bookstore. The past couple weeks have been really wonderful in terms of handselling. Most of the things have been books that were featured here or are rather popular, but I still love the social and human connection of introducing a book a reader seems really interested. Here … Continue reading Get Rec’d with Amanda – Volume 9! →

Wildwood Whispers by Willa Reece is $2.99! I mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet. It reminded me a bit of one of my favorite books, Garden Spells, but with some darker tones. Have you read this one?

The Battle of the Greasy Grass, also known as The Battle of the Little Bighorn, or as Custer’s Last Stand, took place on June 25, 1876 in what is now Montana. It was fought between U.S. troops, led by George Custer, against Lakota Sioux, Arapaho, and Northern Cheyenne warriors led by Sitting Bull, Chief Gall, and Crazy Horse. The Lakota Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne won the battle. While most fighters on both sides were men, … Continue reading Kickass Women in History: Buffalo Calf Road Woman →
