The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance and the first in a series. Aarya gave this one a C+ and would recommend it with reservations:
The writing is polished, the grovel is so satisfying (I love desperate heroes at their wits’ end), and Thea has my permission to rule the world for eternity. Adams’s voice is magnetic; my eyes were glued on the page because the dialogue flowed seamlessly. Time stood still, and I was shocked to discover that four hours had whirled past after setting it down.

I’ve been talking about this book for weeks, and now I get to talk to the author: Deanna Raybourn joins me to talk about her new thriller, Killers of a Certain Age. We talk about the power of being underestimated, and the painfulness of being expected to disappear as you age. Battles against misogyny! Destroying the patriarchy! Aging is awesome! Join us for a very casual discussion of hypothetical and and actual historical murder. … … Continue reading 527. Killers of a Certain Age with Deanna Raybourn →

The Heiress Hunt by Joanna Shupe is $1.99! This is book one in Shupe’s latest historical romance series. Elyse recently reviewed this one and gave it a C-. I think Elyse and I both agree that Shupe does a wonderful job about giving us tantalizing sequel bait.

Tonight is the finale (maybe? I think?)of The Bachelorette and my friend, Jen, has decided to join me in my suffering. Update: Google tells me this is not the finale. FUCK. I’m guessing next week is After the Final Rose. Pudding says she votes that the season ends with Gabby and Rachel pushing all the men into the sea and spending the rest of their time in Mexico hanging out together. After her upsetting conversation … Continue reading Elyse Watches The Bachelorette S19 E10: Not the Finale →
This Rec League comes to us from Sue (Hi, Sue!): I am writing to the Rec League to ask for book recs for my about-to-be-formed book club! The group seems to have a wider range of usual book genres: one person likes to read psychological thrillers, another likes dystopian YA, and most prefer fiction. I almost exclusively read romance at this point, but when I do venture out, I prefer books with “Earl had to … Continue reading The Rec League: Book Club Suggestions →
Just in time for Halloween, here is a historical horror romance in which a woman builds her own boyfriend out of an assemblage of attractive parts, a deed that I do not endorse. This is a strange, off-beat book that won’t please everyone, but once I settled into it I quite enjoyed this funny romance, in which Dr. Frankenstein’s sister builds a boyfriend and learns a little something about basic ethics and empathy in a … Continue reading Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne →
Hey all! A nice little short and sweet Links post for your mid-week blues! I had a lot of social activities last weekend. Lots of one on ones, meeting new people. It’s exhausting! I’m also attending a wedding this weekend. My battery is running low and I feel like I will probably crash when it’s all over. I’m an introvert in the sense that socializing really drains me and I need to recharge. Anyone else feel … Continue reading Links: Dolly Parton, Kitchen Goods, & More →
I didn’t recap last week’s episode for 2 reasons: 1. It was the Men Tell All episode which is a clip show with a lot of shouting over each other (Ed. note: yuck.) and 2. I had COVID brain. (Ed. note: also yuck. Been there.) Despite her sassiness, Pudding was a good nurse and made sure we took big naps with her each day. I asked if she was going to watch this episode and … Continue reading Elyse Watches The Bachelorette–S19 E9: Overnight Dates →
Killers of a Certain Age is a sharp mix of heist, thriller, mystery, and the type of story where, besides all that action, the four main characters are shifting from one phase of their lives to another. There’s a lot of chemistry, both literal and interpersonal, murder, plotting, hunting, and scheming. There’s also a lot of on-page murder, but because everyone who is dispatched is quite terrible, it didn’t bother me too much, especially not … Continue reading Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn →

RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.
