Kickass Women in History: Stephanie St. Clair
TW: rape, racism, mob violence, murder, anti-semitism This month’s Kickass Woman is a woman of complex morals who, despite making a lavish living through crime, was adored in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance. Stephanie St. Clair, known as Queenie, ran a numbers racket throughout the 1920s and 30s and kept control of it despite efforts of the Mafia and the Law to take her down. She was also a civil rights activist, who invested in … Continue reading Kickass Women in History: Stephanie St. Clair

Dukes, Old School, & More

RECOMMENDED: Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier is $3.99! I have such incredibly fond memories of this book. My best friend and I read this together in high school, but my school library only had one copy, so I had to wait my turn. It’s a lovely fantasy novel with some romance, but be warned that it’s a slow, slow burn. Definitely trigger warnings for rape/sexual assault.

I’ve Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm by Kelly Bowen is $1.99! This is the first book in the Lords of Worth series and it was mentioned in a guest post on “feminist favorites.” Bowen has recently released a couple historical fictions, but I’d love to see a return to historical romance.

Welcome back to Wednesday Links! I’m currently on a social interaction hiatus and wow, does it feel great not to make plans for a while. I’m also not as motivated to leave my home when it’s above 85 degrees. No, thank you! In monumental news, our shy Toast (the cat we adopted in May who was rescued from a hoarding situation) walked up to my hand and gave it a sniff. It’s the first time … Continue reading Links: 90s TV, Strikes, & More

Mostly Horror!

RECOMMENDED: We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix is $2.99! In fact, a few of Hendrix’s horror novels are on sale right now. Carrie read this one and gave it an A-:
It’s a fantastic celebration of music, it has great characters, it’s funny and sad and awful and terrifying and hurrah and feminist, and it is all about how our passions can save our souls.
