We’re about halfway through the month and I am always amazed at the sheer volume of books that routinely come out each week! We have some historical romance, a historical mystery, and a new book by Alexis Hall. It’s a shorter list than I had thought, this week. Which books are on your TBR pile? Any overlap with our picks? Let us know in the comments!

Nora Goes Off Script by Annabel Monaghan is $1.99! Shana gave this one a C+:
Nora Goes Off Script made me laugh out loud, and offered a soothing fantasy about discovering your humdrum life is someone else’s perfection. It felt more like women’s fiction than romance, and I found myself wishing for more flavor in the love story, and in Nora’s meatloaf.

If you are even remotely on bookish social media, then you are aware of Fourth Wing. It’s been much-hyped and sold out and everywhere I look online there are rave reviews for this YA-fantasy-romance. I am not here to yuck anyone’s yum. If you read Fourth Wing and you loved it, I am totally happy for you. I want people to love what they read. This was not a book that worked for me, though, … Continue reading Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros →

Welcome back to Whatcha Reading! Here’s how we’re kicking off October: Claudia: I’m reading A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by KJ Charles, after weeks of waiting for my library copy to drop. It’s book 2 of her new series and I’m glad to be back to the marsh (posh side) now. Lara: I’m trying to get myself back on track with my reading challenge after a major diversion into Alice Coldbreath territory. So … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? October 2023, Part One →

Witchful Thinking by Celestine Martin is $2.99! I believe this is Martin’s debut romance with some light, witchy vibes. This was mentioned on a previous witch-themed Hide Your Wallet. Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B-.

THIS is episode 584 (I said in the intro that last week was 584 but I was wrong. Oops – my bad). Maggie Tokuda-Hall returns as a guest to talk about The Siren, The Song and the Spy, and so much has changed since our last conversation in Episode 406 when the first book, The Mermaid, The Witch, and the Sea released in May 2020. We also talk about racism and her experience with Scholastic … Continue reading 584. Queer Pirate Decolonization Fantasy with Maggie Tokuda-Hall →

RECOMMENDED: A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan is $3.99! This is the first book in the Lady Trent series, which Carrie really loves. Readers say the book is pretty awesome in terms of concept, but they surprisingly wanted more dragons. Have you read this book or series?

The Bookshop and the Barbarian is a sweet, funny fantasy/romance story. It’s advertised as “cozy” and it is. It’s pure comfort and whimsy with a happy ending for all. Even the villain has a cozy side. So, if you like cozy stories then curl yourself up with a cup of tea and enjoy. If not, feel free to take a drink every time I type the word “cozy.” Maribella Waters rides into the town of … Continue reading The Bookshop and the Barbarian by Morgan Stang →
Welcome back to Wednesday Links! I just got back from taking Linus to the vet for a check up and he’s gained a pound, which is great. (Backstory: Linus was diagnosed with a thyroid condition about two years ago and seeing his weight come back has been great.) However, he is very much a grumpy old man with lots of fighting spirit. We’re also getting some fall weather in New England, so I’m making chili! … Continue reading Links: Book Recs, Auctions, Matt Berry, & Peter Capaldi →
