RECOMMENDED: The Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, as are all of today’s featured sales. Sarah read this one and gave it a B:
I liked the painstaking and careful character development of the first half more than the zoomy-zoom plot of the second half, but the foundation of historical fiction and incredible detail coupled with folk magic, ghosts, and negotiating with spirits made this an exceptionally fun, absorbing, and thoughtful story.
What Are Your Annual Re-Reads?
I know many romance readers are also ritual re-readers, with books they re-read or seek out at different times of year. Some folks read The Hogfather every holiday season, for example. Other people re-read a specific book once a year, but the timing is more flexible, and might be whenever the mood strikes them. I think that’s so neat, both as a unique way to celebrate a book that is precious to a person, and that … Continue reading What Are Your Annual Re-Reads?
Get Rec’d with Amanda – Volume 59
Welcome back to Get Rec’d! I feel like this one is more romance heavy, which typically doesn’t happen. We recommend so many romances on the site that these columns tend to lean more toward other genres. When I prep these, I never know what sorts of books I’m going to use. I simply keep a running list and then pull from that. What book recommendations have you received lately? Any winners?
Kickass Women in History: Marlow Moss
Marlow Moss was an artist who defied conventional art rules as well as conventional ideas about gender and sexuality. Since she referred to herself during her life as “she,” I will do so here. However, critics today speculate whether today she might have defined herself as non-binary, gender-fluid, or transgender. Marlow was born Marjorie Jewel Moss in 1889 in London. She loved music, but a miserable attack of tuberculosis halted her chances of becoming a … Continue reading Kickass Women in History: Marlow Moss

First Love, Take Two by Sajni Patel is $2.99! This is a contemporary romance where two exes become roommates. We featured this one on a previous edition of Cover Awe. Shana gave this a B-:
Readers who like to root for a couple who are up against a closed-minded community, and who sympathize with an anxious, and occasionally strident heroine, would enjoy First Love, Take Two. If you’re looking for a standalone romance, low angst, and a couple with stellar communications skills, this might not be for you. Either way, my fellow foodies will want platters of buttermilk biscuits and tacos at hand while you read.
Book Review
Death Comes to the Village by Catherine Lloyd
I read about book 3 in this series, Death Comes to Kurland Hall, in the December 2015 issue of Romantic Times, which we’re recapping on the podcast. As I mentioned in Whatcha Reading, like a completely strange human being, I didn’t start with book three. I started with book one, Death Comes to the Village. This review will be mostly about that book, with some warnings about book two, Death Comes to London. A Very Important … Continue reading Death Comes to the Village by Catherine Lloyd

598. Historical Romances for Horse Girls with Mimi Matthews
Mimi Matthews returns to the show to talk about her latest novel, The Lily of Ludgate Hill, which is the third book in her Belles of London series. Among the major themes of this book? PINING. SO MUCH PINING. Which I love. But this is also a book about grief: characters are pining for what was as much as other characters are pining for what could be. So we talk about grief, loss, hope, and … Continue reading 598. Historical Romances for Horse Girls with Mimi Matthews
