The Rec League: Historical Romances with House Parties

Featured image for The Rec League: Historical Romances with House Parties

Who doesn’t love a good party in general, right? They’re often fun, especially with a few cohorts in attendance, and sometimes they can have a pretty decent food and drink selection. But a house party in a historical romance is a whole ‘nother beast. There are fantastic dresses and oh, the cravats! There’s usually some sort of scheming happening and super secret canoodling happening in a drawing room or dimly lit garden. All manner of … Continue reading The Rec League: Historical Romances with House Parties

A Rec League HaBO: Fishing Towns

We have something a little different this Sunday. Recently, we received an email from Diana about her recent love of fishing village settings. She remembers reading a particular series set in Nova Scotia, but can’t figure out the title or author, and she’d love to read some similar books. Maybe we can help her out, either by reuniting her with the series she loved or giving her some great recs: I’m completely stuck. I’m a … Continue reading A Rec League HaBO: Fishing Towns

Whatcha Reading? January 2016 Edition

Cozy winter still life: cup of hot coffee and book with warm plaid on windowsill against snow landscape from outside.

Happy reading new year, everyone! It’s time for our monthly thread of discussion and book purchase, where we share what we’re currently reading and then buy at least 2/3 of what other people are reading because you all have marvelous taste and temptation is tempting. Woo! Sarah: I’m reading The Immortals: Olympus Bound by Jordanna Max Brodsky, and I was not expecting to like it as much as I have been. It has a LOT of … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? The Rec League: Historical Erotica & Erotica without Billionaires

Featured image for The Rec League: Historical Erotica & Erotica without Billionaires

Recently, we’ve had a couple emails and comments about different types of erotica and erotic romance that stray from the rich billionaire formula. The first request is for books that have an extra element of sex in them without being overtly in the BDSM camp: You’ve reviewed a lot of books with non-traditional sexualities or BDSM themes, which I appreciate. However I rarely seem to find my personal preference – very mild kinkiness, vanilla with … Continue reading The Rec League: Historical Erotica & Erotica without Billionaires

Whatcha Reading? November 2015 Edition!

A cute adorable kitten wearing glasses reading a book

It’s the most… wonderful tiiiiiiiime… of the month. Time to share what we’re reading! (I bet you thought I was going to wish you a happy period or something. Ha. Not.) It’s the time when we talk about what we’re reading, we ask you what books you’re enjoying, and then we all buy everything that sounds interesting and bemoan our credit card statements. What could be better?! Sarah:  I am reading Act Like It by … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? November 2015 Edition!

Books On Sale

Recommendations for the Harlequin Sale, Anyone?

Books on Sale: Sex, Straight Up by Kathleen O'Reilly & More

Sex, Straight Up by Kathleen O’Reilly is one of the category romances I have recommended most frequently, especially when I need to change someone’s mind about the genre. I reviewed this book and gave it an A-, writing:

There are two things you need to know about this book: you like tortured, healing heroes who are genuinely good guys? Go find this book. O’Reilly’s mastery of the incredibly sexy, almost-three-dimensional man continues in this book.

Second, I was unfortunately predisposed to dislike it. I knew that Daniel is a widower whose wife died in the World Trade Center.

O’Reilly is a very, very talented writer, and I loved this book a LOT. And, with this big sale right now, it’s $1.99.

The Rec League: Holiday Romance Rereads

Featured image for The Rec League: Holiday Romance Rereads

In the latest edition of Hide Your Wallet, Reader Mary Star left a comment about looking for some great holiday reads to pair with her Hallmark movie binge watching: Can we do a separate Thanksgiving/holiday release thread as well? Maybe with new releases as well as old faves and recommendations? I’ve fired up my Hallmark channel and I’d love to pick up some books as well for reading during the commercials. And of course, here … Continue reading The Rec League: Holiday Romance Rereads

Book with a field and a road on the pages against a blue cloudy sky

It’s time for the most expensively enjoyable open thread of the month: Whatcha Reading? Sarah: You guys, I have a legitimate reason to be on Pinterest. I have justifiable research to be done on Pinterest. It’s like the worst time slurp EVER. It’s not even a slurp. It’s a gobble. A Time Feast, if you will. Plus, I feel guilty AND I’m enjoying it AND I have a reason to pin the crap out of everything, … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? October 2015 Edition

The Rec League: Romance-Friendly Comics

Featured image for The Rec League: Romance-Friendly Comics

Some of the best love stories I’ve ever read have been in comic books. Comics are full of great romance, but unless you are looking at a graphic novel or a stand-alone story arc, you need to be thinking less “Romance Novel” and more “Soap Opera” because of the lack of closure due to the serial format of the genre. That being said, comic books have been exploring all kinds of romances since they first … Continue reading The Rec League: Romance-Friendly Comics

Guest Request: Calling All Conrads!

Book with a field and a road on the pages against a blue cloudy sky

We recently received an email from Reader Leigh-Ann, asking for some help finding heroic Conrads! Here’s what she said: My friend Conrad is going into the Marines this December. One day, we were talking about this and the fact that I read nine or ten books a week, and he said that every time he sees a character with his name in a book, that character is a villain. Conrad does not read romance, however! I … Continue reading Guest Request: Calling All Conrads!
