An Outlander and Knitting Giveaway!

Book Outlander Updated 10 October: We have a winner! The lucky recipient of a pair of Lantern Moon needles and a copy of Outlander is:

Jennifer in GA, who said that,  Outlander has pushed me to sign up for a knitting class so I can learn to knit ALL THE THINGS, but especially the fingerless glove/arm warmer thingies.”

Congratulations, Jennifer, and thank you to everyone who entered! Next week, we'll have another knitting pattern from Elyse, who is here for your winter knitting needs. Thank you for entering and for reading Smart Bitches!

To help you get through the rough months until Outlander resumes, and to assist in your Outlandish knitting endeavors, we're giving away a copy of the novel Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and a pair of ebony Lantern Moon knitting needles!

Ebony Knitting Needles

The winner can choose between straight or circular ebony needles by Lantern Moon–we'll even try to accommodate your needle size preference–and can also choose the format for their copy of Outlander. We're all about choices around here.

Just leave a comment below telling us what you'd knit with your bitchin' needles to enter.

The winner will be randomly selected on Friday 10 October 2014 at 12pm Eastern.

Standard disclaimers apply: Void where prohibited. Open to international residents where permitted by applicable law. Must be over 18 and ready to knit like the wind. No poking other people with the needles. No putting your eye out. The book Outlander does not contain pictures of shirtless Jamie, but the sex scenes may cause the vapors. I am not the boss of you. Charles is in charge.

I'm betting that many a knitted garment will be made during the Outlander hiatus, and we want you to be able to knit with us. So, what will it be? Arm warmers? Outlandish cowls? Share your plans with us!

Cowls, cowls & more cowls! 🙂

  2. undomielregina says:

Lace shawls and blankets!  Right now, http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hearthstone-blanket is calling to me most strongly (right after the gloves and the baby blanket and the socks that I have queued up, at least…).

  3. Lisa J says:

Definitely the cowl pattern and then maybe a poncho or two.  Oh, and some scarves.

  4. StarOpal says:

I’ve just gotten into knitting in the last couple years and the goal I’m working towards is a hoodie dress.

Though, golly Moses, that hearthstone blanket is gorgeous!

  5. Heather says:

I would really love to knit one (or twenty) of those cowls! 🙂

  6. Maria Mesias says:

    A blanket!

  7. I always wanted a scarf like the fourth Doctor’s. Maybe I should try knitting one.

  8. Keslynn says:

I would knit up a lot of dish/washcloths. Those are my favorite things to make.

  9. TheoLibrarian says:

I made an Outlander cowl yesterday and now I’m working on the handwarmers.  I’d probably use the needles to knit up a cozy afghan as those are my favorite things to make!

  10. Joy says:

I want one of those cowls!  Thick soft yarn on pretty needles. I want.

  11. kkw says:

My last zillion projects have been top down cardigans, I’m a little obsessed with them, but I’m currently trying to finish up a skirt so I can move on to arm warmers. Only I’d use double pointed needles for those…so if I won new needles I might take it as a sign that I should stop being such a chicken and try the vintage dress pattern I’ve been eyeing for years.

  12. Lynnd says:

I have a number of projects on the go (of course), but right now am working on cowls to give as Christmas presents (thanks for the pattern Elyse), and am eagerly waiting for the shawl pattern.  Those needles are gorgeous.

  13. sandyl says:

Right now, I would knit a thick but lacy scarf. It’s cold, but the heat hasn’t been turned on yet!

  14. GHN says:

Heliotais pi shawl! It’s sooo gorgeous! Pattern here (free!): http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/heliotaxis-pi-shawl
(Ravelry requires registration, but it’s free, and well worth it for any knitter and crocheter, since there are loads and loads of free patterns in the database)
I’ll probably knit that shawl anyway.
Alternatively, I might do the Celestarium shawl, which is another pi shawl. That one is also gorgeous, as is the sister shawl, Southern Skies. 😀 http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/celestarium
I just need to finish up my current WIP, the Shetland Pi shawl KAL in purple.

  15. SB Sarah says:

I’m not eligible, but I’m FREEZING right now and wish typing generated stockinette stitch so I’d be warmer as I worked.

  16. Ceece says:

I would knit an outlander cowl on giant needles.  I don’t have time for small stitches!  We had snow this weekend.  Winter is coming… (not to mix my show metaphors).

  17. mochabean says:

After I’ve finished my “o-mi-god-that-cowl-is-so-cool-can-u-make-me-one-too-outlandish-cowl- by-Elyse” gift list, I want to knit mitts with cashmere yarn

  18. caren l. bevill says:

Oh, the cowl thing you posted a little while back!  I love it!

  19. Nicole says:

If I won these needles, if make another drop stitch scarf. They’re lovely to look at and fun to make, and come out best when made on straight needless.

  20. mcmutton says:

    Cowls, scarves, and fingerless mitts!

  21. Tracy says:

I would knit one of the amazing cowls Claire wears in Outlander and it would be for me.

  22. I would knit the Outlander cowl with them!

  23. susan says:

I have been making cowls like they are going out of style, so it is time for something else. I would make a poncho or a shawl.

  24. Ashley says:

I’m going to make the arm warmer/gauntlet things! I’m stuck in an office on a computer for 10 hours a day and it’s very chilly back there. Obviously I can’t wear gloves to type but the arm warmers would help.

  25. AnnB says:

    A whiskey cozy!

  26. I’d knit a shawl or poncho or something or that sort for my mom for Christmas. She gets chilled a lot. (Dammit, I really need to get started if I intend to knit anything for Christmas! o_O)

  27. Jennifer Soller says:

The Capelet! Dying for a capelet.

  28. C.B. says:

I would knit a hat. Because it’s October in Wisconsin and I can’t find any of mine!

  29. Candice says:

I would knit arm warmers. I have already knitted the cowl, which is a great pattern.

  30. Darlynne says:

I am ready to knit like the wind and would start with learning how; it’s been a while since the last time. But those cowls, oh, those cowls. This could be the beginning of a new fixation. Thank you for the giveaway.

  31. Pamela says:

So far I’m a one trick pony with my Outlander cowls.  I’m gifting them to friends and family, and have a list of about 10 more to do.  I’d like to try the arm warmers and can’t wait to try the forth coming shall pattern that was mention in your past blog. Here’s one of my cowls modeled by my dear friend:
    Picture of my Cowl

  32. Oh you crafty people. I so want to be one of you one of these days … it’ll happen when my singing is just as good in public as it is when I’m in the shower. I sound awesome in there. LOL. Good luck everyone!

  33. Bernadette says:

Wow love those needles!! Made 2 of yor bitchen cowls!! Can you say CHRISTMAS Gifts?? Lol
Thanks for the give a way!!!

  34. JennyOH says:

Probably a cowl on circular needles…that is about the extent of my knitting ability, so I need the practice!

  35. KellyM says:

I’m partial to blankets and scarves (flat and easy, very little shaping involved), but I want to try branching out into shawls and cowls. Thanks for the great give away! 🙂

  36. Melanie says:

Arm-warmers! All the arm-warmers! But then I’d have to experiment with a cowl or two. Though I do have a blanket pattern or 3 I’d like to try…..

  37. Cecilia says:

Arm warmers! I love the things. Obsessively so.

  38. Jennifer in GA says:

Outlander has pushed me to sign up for a knitting class so I can learn to knit ALL THE THINGS, but especially the fingerless glove/arm warmer thingies.

  39. Gwen Hayes says:

I canna have too many arm warmers.

  40. Judie Cooper says:

Well originally I was thinking arm warmers but then I saw one of the shawls on ravellry that someone had linked to.
