This year, when selecting my choices to review for the RITA Reader Challenge, I made sure to choose books I actually own. I got this in one of many e-book sales, intrigued by the notion of a fantasy romance with a librarian heroine, not exactly something you see that often. It turns out that Dafne, as well as being a devoted librarian and archivist, is a scholar and a linguist who delights in learning new … Continue reading The Pages of the Mind by Jeffe Kennedy →
NB: This is a wonderful guest post from Rose, who recently saw the film Wonder Woman. To see the site’s grade, check out Redheadedgirl’s review of the film. We also did a Wonder Woman-only Links post and some book recommendations for before or after screening the film! … Wonder Woman is, start to finish, an absolute dream. I took one breath before the movie started and one breath after the credits, and have no memory of any taken … Continue reading Guest Post: The Power of Wonder Woman →
So, while I’d like to start this review off by describing why I loved this book – and I did love this book – I instead feel the need to begin with a content warning for self harm and some suicidal ideation. There’s no indication of this in the book’s description and the first mention happens only a few pages in. I found it abrupt, but it wasn’t so unsettling that it turned my opinion … Continue reading The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre →
So there was this time back in the day when I decided to get married, which was, in retrospect, pretty obviously a terrible idea. Not as terrible as the Japanese kanji tattoo my brother got when he was seventeen (note: we are not Japanese; further note: we do not speak Japanese; final note: he claimed it meant “lost soul,” riiiiiiight), but solidly worse than That Time I Did That Thing To My Hair, as well … Continue reading The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre →
I just couldn’t with this book. Maybe it’s not fair that I’m calling it a DNF at the 23% mark, but god, I just cannot bring myself to open it again. It may very well be a personal problem. Sometimes, when I am insanely stressed out, I just can’t sit and READ – as in “eyes on a page” reading. So, I bought the audiobook, thinking that might help. Except the narrator was one of … Continue reading Barefoot at Midnight by Roxanne St. Claire →
I really wanted to have a great review for you all. I bought Ghost Gifts by Laura Spinella on May 8th, right after signing up to review. 3,349 people thought it was pretty good – it has an average of 4.5 stars on Amazon. Give the book a try! Really, you probably will like it. I however, did not. I thought about admitting my failure to Amanda at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. Telling her that … Continue reading Ghost Gifts by Laura Spinella →
Good scifi romances are hard to find, but The Champion of Barésh by Susan Grant proves, they are out there. The Summary: A low-born woman willing to risk everything to save her family. A second born prince seeking redemption in the eyes of his King and people. When their goals align over the ancient sport they both love will they become each other’s greatest ally, or will the secret at the heart of it all … Continue reading The Champion of Barésh by Susan Grant →
Molly Harper’s Half Moon Hollow series is one of my favorite auto-buys. It is the stuff that comfort reads are made of, with a nice balance of humor and horror and an occasional insight into the ugly mechanics of prejudice. If the series has a flaw, it is that while the heroes, both fangy and furry, are good looking and good guys, they are sometimes less than fascinating. However, in the case of Where the … Continue reading Where the Wild Things Bite by Molly Harper →
Full disclosure: I like the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) series. I rarely go for paranormals, but they’re the exception. I’ve wanted to read The Beast for a while, so the RITA Challenge was the perfect reason to finally get to it. Then I remembered that I’d taken a break from the series way back in book #5. Did I mention The Beast is book #14 in the series? That’s right – in a moment of questionable … Continue reading The Beast by J.R. Ward →
You could read the book description above and skip reading Trust My Heart as it summarizes the story much better than I ever could. Yes, it is a pretty typical small town story and you know how it is going to end. But you would miss the author’s storytelling skills and her way of keeping you in a bit of suspense until the end of the story. There were many times while reading this book … Continue reading Trust My Heart by Carol J. Post →
Like many RITA reviewers, I ended up with a book in a genre I rarely read. Not that I haven’t enjoyed “inspirational” books in the past, just that I end up finding them less than inspirational. I went in with few expectations and came out pretty much as expected. Full disclosure: When I signed on for this book I checked availability with the GBPL but failed to notice that the only copy they had was … Continue reading Trust My Heart by Carol J. Post →
