Lit Wicks: Zoe Archer/Eva Leigh

Welcome to Lit Wicks! This is where we pair an author’s backlist with candles to really immerse yourself in the reading experience. All of the candles featured in these post are from Etsy, which means there is often worldwide shipping and that you’re supporting independent crafters and sellers. The Etsy candle rabbit hole is one I have gone down many times. We’re honoring author Eva Leigh/Zoe Archer with November’s Lit Wicks selection! Winter’s Heat by Zoe Archer - A Nemesis Unlimited Novella

Winter’s Heat by Zoe Archer - A Nemesis Unlimited Novella

Winter’s Heat is a Christmas-themed novella from Zoe Archer, set in the world of her Nemesis Unlimited series in Victorian England.  It’s a book that starts off well, but has some strange holes in it.  It’s fun if you can turn off your analytical brain – but I could not turn that part of my brain off, so I found it to be frustrating. First of all, I haven’t read the previous book in the … Continue reading Winter’s Heat by Zoe Archer - A Nemesis Unlimited Novella

Books on Sale: a Recommended Historical from Zoe Archer And More!

RECOMMENDED: Sweet Revenge by Zoe Archer is $2.99 right now. This book is a unique, fast-paced, historical-but-not-in-a-ballroom adventure. I reviewed this book in June and gave it a B+:  One aspect of this book that I thoroughly enjoyed was the way in which Archer takes the power in each scene and transfers it between the two characters one after the other. Sometimes he's the dominant one, sometimes she is. And they learn to work together, … Continue reading Books on Sale: a Recommended Historical from Zoe Archer And More!

Skies of Gold by Zoe Archer

Skies of Gold by Zoe Archer

The only bad thing about this book is that it ends.  This book is a sublime example of how to do character-driven speculative fiction (specifically, steampunk).  I loved the characters, I loved the setting, I loved the world building, and boy howdy did I love the romance. The plot:  Kali came to Liverpool from India to work as an engineer.  In the bombing of Liverpool, she lost a leg.  She goes to the windy, rainy island … Continue reading Skies of Gold by Zoe Archer

Sweet Revenge by Zoe Archer

Sweet Revenge by Zoe Archer

In Zoe Archer's books, there are rules and limits, there are extraordinary things that happen, and there are characters that are unique. But the story and the people within it are always grounded in a place that is consistent and intelligent. I have a solid sense of trust that while the people and their abilities might be  incredible, because they are Archer's characters, I believe in them, and in the world they inhabit. Sweet Revenge … Continue reading Sweet Revenge by Zoe Archer

Lady X’s Cowboy by Zoe Archer

Lady X’s Cowboy by Zoe Archer

I enjoy Zoe Archer's writing, so when she said she'd published one of her early novels, Lady X's Cowboy, I grabbed it and started reading nearly immediately. While it does have some innovative elements to the plot, the unevenness of the characterization and conflict undermines the overall effect of the story. First, contrast the re-release cover on the left with the original Dorchester cover here:   Quite a difference, huh? I confess to liking the … Continue reading Lady X’s Cowboy by Zoe Archer

Chain Reaction by Zoe Archer, a Guest Review by CarrieS

(With Bonus Mini-review of: The Clockwork Girl.) I reviewed Archer's first science fiction ebook, Collision Course, about 8th Wing and their fight against PRAXIS and I loved it.  A special thanks to all the commentators who pointed out that in real life PRAXIS can stand for a type of standardized test.  I still love the series but now every time the word comes up all I can think of is number two pencils.  Anyway, I … Continue reading Chain Reaction by Zoe Archer, a Guest Review by CarrieS
