Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.

Welcome back to Wednesday Links! I enjoyed the long weekend in the States and got some great reading done. I posted up on the couch with my wonderful electric blanket while it snowed outside. I can’t remember the last time I did that. I’m sure I was also motivated by the fact that Final Fantasy XIV servers were down for an entire 24-hours and I needed to fill my time somehow. Did any of you have … Continue reading Links: Terry Pratchett, Bonsai, & More

Books on Sale: One Night Wife by Ainslie Paton & More

One Night Wife by Ainslie Paton is 99c! This is book one in The Confidence Game series and I thought we had mentioned it previously on the site, but alas, it did not already exist in our database. It’s possible I saw it from Elyse’s Goodreads because she rated it five stars.

Books on Sale: The Marriage Contract by Katee Robert & More

RECOMMENDED: The Marriage Contract by Katee Robert is 99c! This is an arranged marriage plot in a modern setting, which I would love to see more of! The book does deal with characters in the mob, which I know is a big off-button for some readers, so FYI. Elyse’s review came out today and she gave it an A:

If you had told me that I’d really love a book about the children of two Boston mob bosses being in an arranged marriage, I’d have raised a skeptical eyebrow. But I’m so so glad that The Marriage Contract proved me wrong because I enjoyed it immensely.

Terry Pratchett: The End and The Beginning

Terry Pratchett: The End and The Beginning

Sir Terry Pratchett passed away yesterday at the age of 66 from complications from Alzheimer’s. His death was announced on Twitter in a funny and touching and altogether perfect way, and all day and continuing through this morning, tributes both hilarious and poignant have shown up in every place where people with words gather to read and write words. Elyse had to tell her husband, who is a huge Pratchett fan, and says it was terribly … Continue reading Terry Pratchett: The End and The Beginning

Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

Hogfather

In an alternate universe, the planet Discworld is carried on the backs of four elephants, who are standing on the back of a giant turtle. In the Discworld books, Terry Pratchett satirizes aspects of our own world with a combination of affection, impatience, and asperity. Terry Pratchett’s writing tends to be free of two things: meanness (there are mean characters, but the author’s view seems to be stern but compassionate) and bullshit. The morals are … Continue reading Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

Whatcha Reading? December 2023, Part Two

Christmas wooden mansion in mountains on snowfall winter day. Cozy chalet on ski resort near pine forest. Cottage of round timber with wooden balcony. Fir-trees covered with snow. Chimneys of stone.

It’s our last Whatcha Reading of 2023! Can you believe it?! Here’s what we’re reading right now: … Sarah: I started the The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport and it is terrific so far. Shana: I just finished Love in the Liner Notes by Katta Kis. It gave me a taste for angst so I’m reading Unnatural Fate by JR Gray. It’s a m/m fated mates romance between a werewolf and a vampire on opposite sides of … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? December 2023, Part Two

Whatcha Reading? December 2023, Part One

Christmas wooden mansion in mountains on snowfall winter day. Cozy chalet on ski resort near pine forest. Cottage of round timber with wooden balcony. Fir-trees covered with snow. Chimneys of stone.

Welcome back to Whatcha Reading? Here’s how we’re starting December: Tara: I’m reading a very cute f/f holiday romance novella called A Flight to Love by Frankie Fyre. It has a second chance situation and the leads are going to be stranded in an airport together. I’ve heard good things and so far it’s delivering. Sarah: I’m listening to A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T Kingfisher based on a recommendation from a podcast … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? December 2023, Part One

The Bookshop and the Barbarian by Morgan Stang

The Bookshop and the Barbarian

The Bookshop and the Barbarian is a sweet, funny fantasy/romance story. It’s advertised as “cozy” and it is. It’s pure comfort and whimsy with a happy ending for all. Even the villain has a cozy side. So, if you like cozy stories then curl yourself up with a cup of tea and enjoy. If not, feel free to take a drink every time I type the word “cozy.” Maribella Waters rides into the town of … Continue reading The Bookshop and the Barbarian by Morgan Stang

Mort

Mort

Terry Pratchett’s profoundly irreverent novels are consistent number one bestseller in England, where they have catapulted him into the highest echelons of parody next to Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen. In this Discworld installment, Death comes to Mort with an offer he can’t refuse especially since being, well, dead isn’t compulsory. As Death’s apprentice, he’ll have free board and lodging, use of the company horse, and he won’t need time off for … Continue reading Mort

Small Gods

The thirteenth novel in the Discworld series from New York Times bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett. Lost in the chill deeps of space between the galaxies, it sails on forever, a flat, circular world carried on the back of a giant turtle— Discworld —a land where the unexpected can be expected. Where the strangest things happen to the nicest people. Like Brutha, a simple lad who only wants to tend his melon patch. Until one day he … Continue reading Small Gods
