Promise of Darkness is a fantasy romance that intrigued me with its Gothic elements and excellent worldbuilding. The tone of the novel shifted midway leaving its Gothic premise behind for something more fantasy-adventure driven. While that shift felt abrupt and pulled me out of the novel momentarily, I was so invested in the plot it was fairly easy to jump back in. I will warn readers that this book ends with a HFN not a … Continue reading Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster →
Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi is $3.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and there are some great books featured today. This book is really adorable and the cover is gorgeous. Readers loved how the friendship between the two awkward main characters unfolded. However, some readers felt the heroine, Penny, was rather unlikeable.

I loooove the London Steampunk series by Bec McMaster. Okay, to be completely honest, until incredibly recently, I had only “read” the first two books, Kiss of Steel and Heart of Iron, as audiobooks. Now, due to some weird quirk of my nature, if I start a series in a particular format, I like to stick to that format for the rest of the series. So, since I had started in audiobooks, I was going … Continue reading Forged By Desire by Bec McMaster →
Garrett Reed and Perry Lowell were partners in the elite Nighthawks for years until the night an undercover assignment coupled with a challenge changed everything. Perry had spent years ruthlessly cutting her hair and every feminine thing from her life to create a new identity as a “blue blood” amongst the all-male companions of her league while silently yearning for her charming partner Garrett. After a joking challenge from him, Perry gives into temptation and … Continue reading Forged By Desire by Bec McMaster →
So full disclosure: I was PMSing bad when I read Kiss of Steel and I was riding the Feels train pretty damn hard (also to the dude who stumbled here by mistake looking for a book review and got an update on my menstrual cycle–Welcome to the Bitchery. Yeah, we talk about periods but there are cookies. And orca sex reviews) so some of my thoughts on this book might be due to highly amplified … Continue reading Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster →
Welcome back to The Rec League! First, big thank you to everyone who commented on our Rec League suggestion post. You’re welcome to keep commenting as you think of things or you can always send us an email! This one was sent in by Reanna: I really like Laurell K Hamilton’s books and at this point it’s the only thing I’ve read lately that isn’t historical romance. I don’t need it to be paranormal, but … Continue reading The Rec League: Sexy Mysteries →
We received this request from Amina! Thanks, Amina! I just watched the 1998 version of Dangerous Liasons ( and I love the 1999 film Cruel Intentions.) I wondered if there were recommendations for books that visited either the theme— seduction as a bet, or rake seducing innocent— or adaptations of it. Amanda: As someone whose favorite rom com is She’s All That, I am here for all the recs. Sarah: Bet Me is an obvious … Continue reading The Rec League: Seduction as a Bet →
A compromising situation forced him into marriage. But has his wife been working for the enemy all along? This latest Rec League is inspired by a discussion I had during one of my romance book club meetings. I can’t remember what book we read, though I think it was a historical romance. But in a lot of cases, in books where there is a brother/sister sibling relationship, the brother is usually an asshole or even the bad guy. They’re judgmental about their sister’s dating life, is ruining her financially, or is somehow impeding … Continue reading The Rec League: Supportive Brothers →
February has arrived and we have books to discuss! Here’s what we’re currently reading: Carrie: Mazes of Power, by my friend Juliette Wade! It’s labelled as “sociological science fiction.” The focus is less on tech and more on social and political intrigue. Very good so far. Shana: I’m digging into The Spies of Shilling Lane by Jennifer Ryan. It’s a British cozy mystery set in WWII about an opinionated middle-aged woman searching for her missing … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? February 2020 Edition, Part One →
Each week I keep hearing about new romance book clubs in bookstores and libraries, and about live events focused on romance – which is awesome! And since it is nearly February, month of “Let’s do something with romance novels” events planning, I expect there to be more. But even beyond The Power of February, I thought a post collecting all the book clubs and events I know of would be helpful each month, should you … Continue reading Upcoming Romance Book Clubs, Events, and More →
