Cover Snark: Jazz Hands

Welcome back to Cover Snark!

Wrath of the Fae by Alessa Thorn. Three dudes with their shirts unbuttoned. It appears they all have the same face, but with different hair. One has wavy black hair and chest tattoos, another has red waxy hair and antlers, the third has wavy black hair with a strip of white toward the front and more chest tattoos.

From Elizabeth: I can’t. Just beyond bonkers. The antlers also seem to be a crown?!? Or a third eye and antlers?!?

And based on deer man, is the guy behind him a magic skunk with the white?

Cover has flowers, fire, shrubs, a cave, library shelves and books. Plus random mismatched fonts. Jeez.

Sarah: Left dude and Center dude have the same Cut and Paste face, right? RIGHT? (It’s freaking me out.)

Elyse: What is up with the dude on the right and his tattoos? What is that?

Why Do Rogues Fall in Love by Stacy Reid. A man is pressing a woman up against a wall. She's wearing a red dress, has a leg wrapped around his hip. One hand is pushing into his hair and the other arm is around his neck/shoulders. However, there's a weird blurring quality of her arms, making them appear photoshopped together.

From Karen: Does no one look at their images before putting them on a book cover? I know this was probably built from other images but, good grief, did they look at the lines of the man’s shoulders in reference to the lines of the shirt/vest? Not only are there vertical lines indicating the top of his arms where there shouldn’t be, if you follow those then the width of the shoulders is less than the width of the waist. Or is it just me?

Sarah: I don’t believe in the position of her right arm unless she is trying to kill him, but I really, REALLY don’t believe in her feet.

(I typed, “I really don’t believe in her feet.” As a sentence. What is the world coming to.)

Amanda: That arm looks like it’s made of putty.

Extreme Medical Services by Jamie Davis. A man in a white t-shirt and jeans walks down a dark street. He's doing jazz hands and they are literally on fire. A stethoscope hangs around his neck and there's an ambulance in the background. The full moon is massive.

From PamG: Here’s an EMT with jazz hands of FIRE! Did his nitrile gloves spontaneously combust? Don’t you examine me with those things; I don’t need no burning sensation. Oh yeah, and WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIS EYES?

Sarah: In the winter my hands feel like that. Do I need extreme medical services?

Claudia: The size of the moon too. Scary!

Sarah: Maybe it’s a super beaver moon? We had one last November.

Elyse: Is that Kieran Culkin?

Amanda: I want to know more about these extreme medical services.

Yule's Fallen Angel by Sky Purington. A shirtless man is facing away, staring at a sparkling, glowing dead tree. We think there are angel wings on his back, but they're cut off or have been shrunken down.

From Jen: I guess those are supposed to be wings on his back but to me it looks more like a flower. I just don’t understand.

Sarah: Why is the tree glowing? He seems to be concerned about it. Also, are those wings sufficient for takeoff and landing?

Amanda: The wings also look…very small for his body. Like little cherubic wings. Do you think he’s self-conscious about his wing size?

I think all three of those fae have the same face. And also possibly the same abs. Are they clones? And the guy on the right, is that a white streak in his hair or a snake attached to his ear?

That Stacy Reid cover is freaking me out. I can’t see the guy’s head, it blends right into the background. And whose arm (tentacle? what?) is that coming around his waist? It also looks like they used a woman’s bodice for the neck and shoulders, because that’s a period neckline for a laced bodice over a chemise. Or is this F/F? I can’t tell!

  2. Kate says:

The extreme part is that the EMT’s really a serial killer?

  3. MelMc says:

I’m reading this on the phone at the eye doctor so my vision is a bit wonky right now, but I saw that last cover as a guy with a giant snail on his back. And a clip on face. Something about the lighting is off and giving a too-large mask effect.

  4. Lori says:

The second one looks like she’s doing a fourth wall break by saying, “Why do rogues fall in love?” and then she snaps his neck.

  5. C says:

Looking at the fae cover, dude on the left, but I’ve seen similar looks elsewhere.

Can I admit that I find jackets without shirts underneath kind of weird? I just get distracted wondering about what they must spend on dry cleaning.

  6. @SB Sarah says:

@MelMc: please tell me you showed the eye doctor and asked if the problem is the cover or your vision? Also: thank you for the reminder that I need to schedule my annual check up!!

  7. denise says:

Wrath: mashup of an 80s hairband and a boy band.

Why Rogues: why indeed? doll bits and pieces thrown at the wall.

    EMS: don’t touch me.

Yule’s: did an owl land on his back? ouch.

  8. Sue says:

I suspect the wing size is why the angel is fallen!

  9. SusanE says:

Red-haired has his hands casually in his pockets. Yeah, it’s all weird but when you have antlers growing on your head nothing else phases you. The one on the left is giving him a thumbs-up with an oddly stretched thumb. The other guy looks more upset because his huge gray wrinkled left hand was recycled from a corpse.

  10. Karen H near Tampa says:

Interestingly, I just tried to find the Stacy Reid book again since I hadn’t noticed her hand and it’s not on Amazon anymore, though it was published last year. Goodreads also gives “not here” error. I was fixated on the shoulders-to-vest ratio when I sent this in but now I see her weird hand that doesn’t seem to have fingernails. I’m going to agree with Amanda’s “putty” comment and denise’s “doll bits and pieces.” Anyway, hopefully someone is redoing or at least fixing the cover before making it available for purchase again.

  11. mysdeefyme says:

The first cover….um doesn’t antlers signify a female deer? Did he steal them from an unsuspecting doe? Did he kill Bambi’s mom…I better stop while I’m ahead.

The second cover…is that his arm behind his waist or her leg? If it’s her leg then did she twist her ankle because her foot is not…footing correctly? Also I can’t tell if that is a very muscular calf or forearm.

Cover 3: I thought it was Rider Strong from Boy Meets World or Patrick J Adams from Suits. An EMT with flaming jazz hands sounds like a fun read though.

Cover 4: Is the glow where the other main character appears? Why do his wings look like they were made of cotton candy?

  12. PamG says:

    re: Wrath of the Fae

Is it only me, or does anyone else see abs like this and start craving lemon wedges and melted butter?

  13. Zuzus says:

The wrathful fae on the right is clearly in a Bonnie Raitt Tribute Cover band. He’s proudest of their version of “Angel from Montgomery,” hence the tattoo.
