  • Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

RECOMMENDED: Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett is $2.99! We had a guest squee review of this one:

Chilling, packed with lore, and a slow burn, Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett is the type of book I’ve been looking for. Their adventure from faerie field research to two professors running like hell from a faerie nightmare kept me on the edge of my seat.

A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love in the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series.

Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party–or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people.

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily’s research, and utterly confound and frustrate her.

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones–the most elusive of all faeries–lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she’ll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all–her own heart.

  • The Switch

    The Switch by Beth O'Leary

RECOMMENDED: The Switch by Beth O’Leary is $2.99! Catherine read this one and gave it an A:

It’s a very gentle, wholesome sort of book. I read it last week when I was sick, and it was really the perfect book to curl up with if one is under the weather.

Eileen is sick of being 79.
Leena’s tired of life in her twenties.
Maybe it’s time they swapped places…

When overachiever Leena Cotton is ordered to take a two-month sabbatical after blowing a big presentation at work, she escapes to her grandmother Eileen’s house for some overdue rest. Eileen is newly single and about to turn eighty. She’d like a second chance at love, but her tiny Yorkshire village doesn’t offer many eligible gentlemen.

Once Leena learns of Eileen’s romantic predicament, she proposes a solution: a two-month swap. Eileen can live in London and look for love. Meanwhile Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire. But with gossiping neighbours and difficult family dynamics to navigate up north, and trendy London flatmates and online dating to contend with in the city, stepping into one another’s shoes proves more difficult than either of them expected.

Leena learns that a long-distance relationship isn’t as romantic as she hoped it would be, and then there is the annoyingly perfect – and distractingly handsome – school teacher, who keeps showing up to outdo her efforts to impress the local villagers. Back in London, Eileen is a huge hit with her new neighbours, but is her perfect match nearer home than she first thought?

  • Circe

    Circe by Madeline Miller

Circe by Madeline Miller is $2.99! This is a big bestseller and I love hearing the convos over reader favorites: Song of Achilles or Circe. Sound off in the comments!

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world.

  • The Seventh Bride

The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher

The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher is 99c at Amazon! This is a Bluebeard retelling and is just shy of 250 pages. Last time this was on sale, comments mentioned that this isn’t a YA book and while it isn’t their favorite work by Kingfisher, it’s still pretty damn good.

Young Rhea is a miller’s daughter of low birth, so she is understandably surprised when a mysterious nobleman, Lord Crevan, shows up on her doorstep and proposes marriage. Since commoners don’t turn down lords—no matter how sinister they may seem—Rhea is forced to agree to the engagement.

Lord Crevan demands that Rhea visit his remote manor before their wedding. Upon arrival, she discovers that not only was her betrothed married six times before, but his previous wives are all imprisoned in his enchanted castle. Determined not to share their same fate, Rhea asserts her desire for freedom. In answer, Lord Crevan gives Rhea a series of magical tasks to complete, with the threat “Come back before dawn, or else I’ll marry you.”

With time running out and each task more dangerous and bizarre than the last, Rhea must use her resourcefulness, compassion, and bravery to rally the other wives and defeat the sorcerer before he binds her to him forever.

  1. FashionablyEvil says:

Ooh, I have read all of these and can happily recommend them all! EMILY WILDE and CIRCE are both excellent. THE SWITCH is more women’s fiction than romance, but also great. And THE SEVENTH BRIDE is not Kingfisher’s strongest book, but it has what I love about her books (weird yet charming with main characters who are good people doing the best they can under some bad circumstances.)

I hope folks enjoy these as much as I did!

  2. Msb says:

I love Circe, one of the best books I’ve ever read about the joy of doing the work one is best at.

And thanks for the tip about The Seventh Bride – a lot of fun, even if not the best Kingfisher I’ve read. That would still be Nettle and Bone.

  3. Susan/DC says:

I can’t recommend CIRCE and THE SONG OF ACHILLES highly enough. Miller is a genius at creating vivid characters, and I love how her Circe is both the creature of legend and yet different. Miller also manages to make the secondary characters 3-dimensional and often poignant, as she does with Prometheus and Daedalus (the story of his attempted flight with Icarus will pierce your heart).

  4. VicSolo says:

I really enjoyed Seventh Bride. Maybe not her best but the bar is high and this one is fun.

  5. drewbird says:

Prince of Lies by Lucy Lennox is free right now! First book in a series and I thought it was hilarious – normally I don’t like deception but the MC was SO BAD at it that this one worked for me 🙂
