  • 10 Things That Never Happened

10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall

10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall is $1.99 and a KDD! This is book one in the Material World series. Given the similar cover designs, I believe it’s tangentially related to Boyfriend Material and Husband Material. Let us know in the comments!

Fake amnesia. Real feelings? Real problems.

Sam Becker loves―or, okay, likes―his job. Sure, managing a bed and bath retailer isn’t exactly glamorous, but it’s good work and he gets on well with the band of misfits who keep the store running. He could see himself being content here for the long haul. Too bad, then, that the owner is an infuriating git.

Jonathan Forest should never have hired Sam. It was a sentimental decision, and Jonathan didn’t get where he is by following his heart. Determined to set things right, Jonathan orders Sam down to London for a difficult talk…only for a panicking Sam to trip, bump his head, and maybe accidentally imply he doesn’t remember anything?

Faking amnesia seemed like a good idea when Sam was afraid he was getting sacked, but now he has to deal with the reality of Jonathan’s guilt―as well as the unsettling fact that his surly boss might have a softer side to him. There’s an unexpected freedom in getting a second shot at a first impression…but as Sam and Jonathan grow closer, can Sam really bring himself to tell the truth, or will their future be built entirely on one impulsive lie?

  • Her Baseborn Bridegroom

Her Baseborn Bridegroom by Alice Coldbreath

Her Baseborn Bridegroom by Alice Coldbreath is $1.99 at Amazon! This is book one in Vawdrey Brothers series. I recently read it and thought it was fine, if a tad underwhelming for me. It was also my first Coldbreath, so maybe I should have started elsewhere.

Lady Linnet Cadwallader has been raised a helpless invalid in her own castle. Brought up to believe she will ‘never make old bones’ she lives a quiet and lonely existence, hiding away her excessive freckles and red hair from a world that believes her to be hideously misshapen and ugly.

Until one day her uncle arranges a marriage of convenience for her, a marriage in name only with a young puppet groom… but Sir Roland does not show up. In his place turns up his base-born brother Mason Vawdrey. And dark, forceful Mason is no-one’s puppet.

Things are about to get interesting at Cadwallader Castle. And Linnet is about to discover that maybe a golden leopardess does not need to change her glorious spots.

This is a full length novel of over 80,000 words set in a medieval style landscape in the fictional kingdom of Karadok. Please do not purchase if you are offended by strong language and or sex scenes.

  • The Space Between Worlds

The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

PODCAST RECOMMENDED: The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson is $1.99! Courtney Milan recommended this one on a podcast episode with us, and I’m sure a lot of us trust what Courtney has to say.

An outsider who can travel between worlds discovers a secret that threatens her new home and her fragile place in it, in a stunning sci-fi debut that’s both a cross-dimensional adventure and a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging.

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total.

On this Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands. Now she has a nice apartment on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. She works—and shamelessly flirts—with her enticing yet aloof handler, Dell, as the two women collect off-world data for the Eldridge Institute. She even occasionally leaves the city to visit her family in the wastes, though she struggles to feel at home in either place. So long as she can keep her head down and avoid trouble, Cara is on a sure path to citizenship and security.

But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, plunging her into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and her future in ways she could have never imagined—and reveal her own role in a plot that endangers not just her world, but the entire multiverse.

  • Starry-Eyed Love

    Starry-Eyed Love by Helena Hunting

Starry-Eyed Love by Helena Hunting is $1.99 and a KDD! This is book two in the Spark House series, which features a group of friends who run an events space. Have you read this series?

Charming, hilarious, and emotional…Starry-Eyed Love is Helena Hunting at her very best!

Having just broken up with her boyfriend, London Spark is not in the mood to be hit on. Especially not when she’s out celebrating her single status with her sisters. So when a very attractive man pays for their drinks and then slips her his number, she passes it right back to him with a ‘thanks, but no thanks’. As the business administrator for their family’s event hotel, the Spark House, London has more important things to worry about, like bringing in new clientele.

As luck would have it, a multi-million-dollar company calls a few months later asking for a meeting to discuss a potential partnership, and London is eager to prove to her sisters, and herself, that she can land this deal. Just when she thinks she has nailed her presentation, the company’s CEO, Jackson Holt, walks in and inserts himself into the meeting. Not only that, but he also happens to be the same guy she turned down at the bar a few months ago.

As they begin to spend more time together, their working relationship blossoms into something more. It isn’t until their professional entanglements are finally over, that London and Jackson are finally ready to take the next step in their relationship. But between Jackson’s secretive past and London’s struggle with her sisters, London must question where she really stands – not just with Jackson, but with the Spark House, too.

  1. Mikey says:

Fun fact: The German title for 10 Things That Never Happened is “The Lost Memory Project”. And I don’t mean that that’s what it translates to in English; I mean that those four English words constitute the title of the German edition. And Husband Material was renamed “Forever Material” in German.

It fascinates me when they invent a new English title for a non-English market. (Did you know that the movie Miss Congeniality was retitled “Miss Détective”, “Miss Secret Agent” and “Miss Undercover” in France, Sweden and the Netherlands?)

But to finally answer the question: Yep, 10 Things That Never Happened is a spinoff, so it’s related to Boyfriend Material and Husband Material. (And technically also to Father Material, but that one’s not out yet.)

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

I was mixed on the Hall. On the one hand, I laughed out loud multiple times but the main characters were so annoying (eventually they improve), that if it weren’t for the humor and the solid cast of secondary characters (aka the romance had to stand on its own), this would have been a DNF.

I really want to like Hall’s books—he’s so funny and has so much potential but his tolerance for asshole characters is just way too high.

  3. Michael I says:

Just to be clear, you do not need to read Boyfriend Material or Husband Material before reading 10 Things That Never Happened.

Basically there’s a brief appearance of a character (or characters, I don’t remember right now) from the earlier books in 10 Things That Never Happened.

  4. Rosemary09 says:

I really enjoyed Her Baseborn Bridegroom. Solid 4 stars. There was a humorous part in there that I think about often. I won’t spoil it, but it has to do with the village wise woman, beauty and honey.

  5. Laurel says:

I loved Her Baseborn Bridegroom, and it sent me to read a lot of Alice Coldbreath. Her Brides of Karadok series follows the Vawdrey Brothers series, but they take place in the same universe. Her Victorian Prizefighters series is also very good.

There seems to be a problem with the link for “Her Baseborn Bridegroom”. Clicking the link gives an error message.

  7. @Amanda says:

@Michael I: Weird. Should be fixed now!

  8. cleo says:

Chiming in about the Hall. It’s in the same world as Boyfriend Material but is completely standalone. All of those books are riffs on movies. This one is a riff on While You Were Sleeping – and like WYWS, the family relationships are as or more important than the romance.

    Here’s my GR review:

B-? M/M rom-com with more com than rom. The plot requires a huge suspension of disbelief, which is kind of the point of the amnesia trope. The romance wasn’t particularly convincing and the narrator was annoying but I enjoyed the ride.

I did enjoy the emotional growth of both protags. There’s also a lot about grief and family and fathers and sons and what success looks like. And it was laugh out loud funny.

  9. Lisa F says:

    Instabought the Coldbreth!

  10. drewbird says:

@Mikey – one of my favorites was the American film “Office Space” who’s French title is “35 heures, c’est deja trop” or in Engligh, 35 hours (the French work week is not 40) is already too much. 10/10, no notes

  11. VicSolo says:

I read The Space Between Worlds a while back and enjoyed it. Interesting ideas and a mystery.
