You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

This HaBO comes from Marina, who wants to find this historical romance. Trigger warning for the description below:
I think this was a regency era setting.
The protagonist goes with stepmother and her daughter to a house party. She is not well treated by them. They secretly plan to entrap a titled rich guy into marriage. The daughter invited him to go to her room at night. He enters the protagonist’s room by mistake and starts making love to her, but since she was given laudanum she thinks it is a dream. (This was done to her so she would not hear what would go on next door.) When the stepmother goes to her daughter’s room – as planned – to find her daughter and “lover” in flagrante delicto, he’s not there but can hear them talking about their plan and is saved.
I can’t remember the rest and it’s making me crazy. I don’t even remember if I finished it. Can anyone help?
Wowza!

I know I read this, but I’m drawing a blank-will look later.
I think this may be Lord Ruin by Carolyn Jewel. The less pretty sister hopes to keep her sister from marrying a noted rake and twists her ankle at the house party. They give her laudanum and put her to bed. Lord Ruin comes in thinking it’s his room and that she’s a party favor from his friends (I think?). But yes, they have sex, she doesn’t know that it’s real at first because opiates, they get caught, and he realizes that he likes her as well as lusts for her. I haven’t read it in like a decade and had to scroll through my Nook app to see the cover because I fully remembered the premise, but needed the cover to recall the title.
Following.
Following! I’ve read this “wrong bedroom” trope several times but I can’t remember which books!

I’m following because I’m fascinated when this was written and how–what I view as–the dubious consent is handled. I like dub con so I’m not itchin’ for a fight or clutching my pearls over here…more like gimme gimme this book 🙂
Impetuous by Candace Camp starts with this scene.
FMC”s aunt and cousin had arranged for MMC to be found in cousin’s room, but cousin has terrible handwriting and he reads the room number wrong. He comes into FMC’s room and starts to kiss and fondle her. She’s been drugged (so she wouldn’t wake up and interfere with the plot) and thinks she’s dreaming. When she finally wakes up they figure out what happened. He is ready to leave but they hear the aunt making a fuss outside the cousin’s door to spring the trap, but it doesn’t work because he’s not there to be caught.
Eloisa James Kiss at Midnight is a Cinderella retelling with the protagonist going to a house party with her stepmother and stepsister, but I don’t remember a wrong room situation.
SusanE got it right. Thank you! It’s the book I am looking for. Read it at the Library ebooks; even though it was first published years ago, it has been recently added to their ebook catalog.
Jill’s suggestion about Lord Ruin by Carolyn Jewell is worth a try. Thanks.
I feel grateful for all the help from SmartBitches. You have never ket me down.
