  • Black Sheep

    Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison

Black Sheep by Rachel Harrison is $1.99! I really enjoy Harrison’s horror novels. I read this one and gave it a B-:

While I could have used more oomph overall, the delivery is full of enough sardonic quips and macabre comedy that I had to keep reading.

A cynical twentysomething must confront her unconventional family’s dark secrets in this fiery, irreverent horror novel from the author of Such Sharp Teeth and Cackle.

Nobody has a “normal” family, but Vesper Wright’s is truly…something else. Vesper left home at eighteen and never looked back—mostly because she was told that leaving the staunchly religious community she grew up in meant she couldn’t return. But then an envelope arrives on her doorstep.

Inside is an invitation to the wedding of Vesper’s beloved cousin Rosie. It’s to be hosted at the family farm. Have they made an exception to the rule? It wouldn’t be the first time Vesper’s been given special treatment. Is the invite a sweet gesture? An olive branch? A trap? Doesn’t matter. Something inside her insists she go to the wedding. Even if it means returning to the toxic environment she escaped. Even if it means reuniting with her mother, Constance, a former horror film star and forever ice queen.

When Vesper’s homecoming exhumes a terrifying secret, she’s forced to reckon with her family’s beliefs and her own crisis of faith in this deliciously sinister novel that explores the way family ties can bind us as we struggle to find our place in the world.

  • One Dark Kiss

One Dark Kiss by Rebecca Zanetti

One Dark Kiss by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99! This is book two in the Grimm Bargains series. I read book one and it was a wild time, though I didn’t fully rule out reading the next one in the series.

Rebecca Zanetti explores the forbidden and the taboo in this modern dark romance twist on Snow White—the second in a captivating new series set in a seductive world of money, power, billionaires, and the dangerous desires that drive them.

Mirror, Mirror . . . Innocence or Sin. The reflection holds a darker truth.

    ALEXEI
I’ve spent the last seven years in the hell of a maximum-security prison, every moment consumed by the need for revenge—revenge against the bastards who framed me, and revenge against the family who stole everything I owned. Now that I’m finally free, nothing will stand in my way. Not even her—my hot as sin new lawyer. Maybe she’s another weapon sent by my enemies to break me, or maybe she’s the key to my freedom. Either way, once she’s mine, I’m never letting her go.

    ROSALIE
When I took this case, I thought I had it under control. But Alexei is no typical convicted killer—he’s a dangerously seductive force of nature. Perhaps it’s the lingering power from his days as heir to a global social media empire. Innocent or not, he’s dangerous in the worst and best ways.

I secure Alexei’s release as we prepare for a new trial, but he wastes no time turning against his traitorous relatives and plotting his return to power. Amidst the chaos, our explosive chemistry ignites, putting us—and everyone I care about—in the crosshairs of ruthless enemies. If we can’t stop them, Alexei plans to burn the whole world down. And if anything, he’s a man of his word . . .

  • Paris Daillencourt Is About to Crumble

Paris Daillencourt Is About to Crumble by Alexis Hall

Paris Daillencourt Is About to Crumble by Alexis Hall is $2.99! This is book two in the Winner Bakes All series. I really struggled with Paris and his treatment of the love interest. Last time this was on sale, the comments said that this one should have been marketed differently. What were your thoughts?

From the bestselling author of Boyfriend Material comes a sweet and scrumptious romantic comedy about facing your insecurities, finding love, and baking it off, no matter what people say.

Paris Daillencourt is a recipe for disaster. Despite his passion for baking, his cat, and his classics degree, constant self-doubt and second-guessing have left him a curdled, directionless mess. So when his roommate enters him in Bake Expectations, the nation’s favourite baking show, Paris is sure he’ll be the first one sent home.

But not only does he win week one’s challenge—he meets fellow contestant Tariq Hassan. Sure, he’s the competition, but he’s also cute and kind, with more confidence than Paris could ever hope to have. Still, neither his growing romance with Tariq nor his own impressive bakes can keep Paris’s fear of failure from spoiling his happiness. And when the show’s vicious fanbase confirms his worst anxieties, Paris’s confidence is torn apart quicker than tear-and-share bread.

But if Paris can find the strength to face his past, his future, and the chorus of hecklers that live in his brain, he’ll realize it’s the sweet things in life that he really deserves.

  • The Witch is Back

The Witch is Back by Sophie Morgan

The Witch is Back by Sophie H. Morgan is $2.99! If you’re still on the witchy romance train, this might be worth picking up. We mentioned it in a previous Hide Your Wallet.

Love is a hex of a thing. Former childhood sweethearts fake a relationship in this charming, witchy romcom.

There’s nothing wrong with being a wallflower. Not to Emmaline Bluewater, anyway. Emma may have been born into witch society, but her days of trying to fit in where she doesn’t belong are over—they ended seven years ago, when the man she’d hoped to marry left town without a word. She’s much happier now, living a delightfully mundane human life in Chicago and running her bar, Toil and Trouble.

Until Bastian Truenote walks through the door and announces that he wants her back.

Bastian had his reasons for leaving—even if he can’t tell Emma what they are. Now, to win Emma’s heart, he’s got to face down an adorably goofy dog familiar, a best friend who’s all too eager to hit him with a carefully aimed hex, and a woman who’s far from the meek witch he remembers.

Magical contracts aren’t easily broken, but as far as Emma’s concerned, not even a marriage of convenience will have her falling under Bastian’s spell again…

I think Paris Daillencourt Is About to Crumble works pretty well as a coming of age novel about a young person learning to mange their mental health. But it really didn’t work for me as a romance.

It was occasionally hard to be in Paris’ head (so much anxiety!) but this was counteracted by the author really turning up the dial on the banter and humour. I will reread for the banter and skim the bits that get too intense.
I really appreciate that Alexis Hall writes such a variety of books and I’m looking forward to the next book in the Winner Bakes All series – Audrey Lane Stirs the Pot – out in December.

  4. Paris should not have been marketed as a romantic comedy. It wasn’t a bad book, not at all, but I picked it up at a very rough time in my life, and it made me feel even worse than I already did (which I hadn’t thought possible.)

If I’d known just how angsty and anxious and difficult it was, I’d have saved it for when I was in a better head space.

To be 100% clear, it is a good book. But it isn’t a romantic comedy.

  7. PamG says:

I read Paris Daillencourt in August, and agree with previous commenters. At the time, I wrote, “What this book isn’t about is British baking shows. It isn’t cozy. It is barely even a romance. The best way I can explain it is that I found Paris’s unhappiness saturated everything and was not adequately balanced by his gradual move toward better mental health.” It is very well-written but emotionally challenging, and shouldn’t have been packaged within an ultra-cute illustrated cover. It was definitely worth the read though.

  8. Paris Daillencourt is a very good book, but I’ve yet to bring myself to reread it. This despite the fact that there’s a prominent, sympathetic, queer religious character, which would otherwise make it catnip for me. The awkwardness is just so awkward.

I am very much looking forward to the next Bake Expectations book, however.

Once Upon a Tablecloth is certainly an intriguing title, @flchen1! Thank you for so often posting bargains.
