  • Witch King

    Witch King by Martha Wells

RECOMMENDED: Witch King by Martha Wells is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this and gave it a B+:

The biggest thing you need to know about Witch King is that it is very different from Murderbot. If you are hoping for a fantasy version of Murderbot you will be disappointed. The tone is different, the humor, when it exists, is dryer, the scope is different, and the violence is dialed waaayyy up. However, on its own merits, Witch King is a complex, interesting fantasy novel that keeps two timelines moving and introduces a group of allies who gel into a found family.

    “I didn’t know you were a… demon.”
    “You idiot. I’m the demon.”
Kai’s having a long day in Martha Wells’ WITCH KING….

After being murdered, his consciousness dormant and unaware of the passing of time while confined in an elaborate water trap, Kai wakes to find a lesser mage attempting to harness Kai’s magic to his own advantage. That was never going to go well.

But why was Kai imprisoned in the first place? What has changed in the world since his assassination? And why does the Rising World Coalition appear to be growing in influence?

Kai will need to pull his allies close and draw on all his pain magic if he is to answer even the least of these questions.

He’s not going to like the answers.

  • To Shape a Dragon’s Breath

To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose

To Shape a Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose is $1.99! This book was recommended in our end of the year podcasts last year. It seems to be well-reviewed and has won a Nebula. Have you read this one?

A young Indigenous woman enters a colonizer-run dragon academy—and quickly finds herself at odds with the “approved” way of doing things—in the first book of this brilliant new fantasy series.

The remote island of Masquapaug has not seen a dragon in many generations—until fifteen-year-old Anequs finds a dragon’s egg and bonds with its hatchling. Her people are delighted, for all remember the tales of the days when dragons lived among them and danced away the storms of autumn, enabling the people to thrive. To them, Anequs is revered as Nampeshiweisit—a person in a unique relationship with a dragon.

Unfortunately for Anequs, the Anglish conquerors of her land have different opinions. They have a very specific idea of how a dragon should be raised, and who should be doing the raising—and Anequs does not meet any of their requirements. Only with great reluctance do they allow Anequs to enroll in a proper Anglish dragon school on the mainland. If she cannot succeed there, her dragon will be killed.

For a girl with no formal schooling, a non-Anglish upbringing, and a very different understanding of the history of her land, challenges abound—both socially and academically. But Anequs is smart, determined, and resolved to learn what she needs to help her dragon, even if it means teaching herself. The one thing she refuses to do, however, is become the meek Anglish miss that everyone expects.

Anequs and her dragon may be coming of age, but they’re also coming to power, and that brings an important realization: the world needs changing—and they might just be the ones to do it.

  • A Thousand Recipes for Revenge

A Thousand Recipes for Revenge by Beth Cato

A Thousand Recipes for Revenge by Beth Cato is $2.49 on Amazon! This is the first book in a series and I feel like a food-based fantasy adventure would be right up the Bitchery’s alley.

A world on the brink of war and a mother and daughter on the run, in a thrilling novel of swashbuckling adventure, culinary magic, and just desserts.

Adamantine “Ada” Garland has an empathic connection to food and wine, a magical perception of aromas, flavors, and ingredients. Invaluable property of the royal court, Ada was in service to the Five Gods and to the Gods-ordained rulers of Verdania—until she had enough of injustice and bloodshed and deserted, seeking to chart her own destiny. When mysterious assassins ferret her out after sixteen years in hiding, Ada, now a rogue Chef, and her beloved Grand-mère run for their lives, only to find themselves on a path toward an unexpected ally.

A foreign princess in a strange court, Solenn unknowingly shares more with Ada than an epicurean gift. They share blood. With her newfound magical perception, she becomes aware of a plot to kill her fiancé, the prince. It’s part of a ploy by adversarial forces in the rival country of Albion to sow conflict, and Solenn is set up to take the blame.

As Ada’s and Solenn’s paths converge, a mother and her long-lost daughter reunite toward a common goal, and against a shadowy enemy from Ada’s past who is out for revenge. But what sacrifices must be made? What hope is there when powerful Gods pick sides in a war simmering to eruption?

  • Ghost Station

    Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes

Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes is $2.99! I mentioned this scifi horror on a previous Hide Your Wallet. I really enjoyed her previous book Dead Silence and it gave me major Ghost Ship vibes but in space. (Ghost Ship is one of my favorite horror movies and features Karl Urban!)

A crew must try to survive on an ancient, abandoned planet in the latest space horror novel from S.A. Barnes, acclaimed author of Dead Silence.

Space exploration can be lonely and isolating.

Psychologist Dr. Ophelia Bray has dedicated her life to the study and prevention of ERS—a space-based condition most famous for a case that resulted in the brutal murders of twenty-nine people. When she’s assigned to a small exploration crew, she’s eager to make a difference. But as they begin to establish residency on an abandoned planet, it becomes clear that crew is hiding something.

While Ophelia focuses on her new role, her crewmates are far more interested in investigating the eerie, ancient planet and unraveling the mystery behind the previous colonizer’s hasty departure than opening up to her.

That is, until their pilot is discovered gruesomely murdered. Is this Ophelia’s worst nightmare starting—a wave of violence and mental deterioration from ERS? Or is it something more sinister?

Terrified that history will repeat itself, Ophelia and the crew must work together to figure out what’s happening. But trust is hard to come by… and the crew isn’t the only one keeping secrets.

Re: Ghost Station, my first thought was “there’s a Karl Urban movie I haven’t seen?! How have I failed myself like this?” Then I googled it and the poster looks vaguely familiar so maybe I have seen it, but I don’t remember it, so now I get the joy of rediscovering a Karl Urban movie! What an unexpectedly lovely Christmas present. I can go from Ghost Ship to Ghost Station to really make sure I don’t sleep tonight.

I’m amused that this time around, the stuff your kindle also has a “vibes list” approach rather than genre. Sweet, Steamy, Spicy, those makes sense to me. I just don’t really know how I would separate things on the Intense, Angsty, Dark scale. https://www.romancebookworms.com/kindle-vibes

  8. JTAlexis says:

    @Laurel

I skimmed through the list, mostly looking for authors I enjoy. I noticed 2 books that I read and enjoyed:

PRINCE AND ASSASSIN (Perilous Courts Book 1) by Tavia lark – high fantasy m/m romance between a prince and the assassin sent to kill him (obviously, he doesn’t). I read the entire series and each book follows a different prince. I thought they were all entertaining. Not much steam but they do have magic tigers.

NOR IRON BARS A CAGE by Kaje Harper – m/m romance between Lyon who was a sorcerer before a tragic accident scarred him (physically and emotionally) and Tobin, an old friend who shows up after 15 years with a summons from the king. The path to recovery/happiness is very twisty and some things don’t quite ring true but, overall, the characters were engaging and the world the author created was interesting.

  9. Big K says:

I really liked Witch King. It is really different than the Murderbot books, but the action really moves and the characters are vivid. I highly recommend it.
