  • A Letter to the Luminous Deep

A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall

RECOMMENDED: A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvia Cathrall is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Elyse read this one and gave it an A:

If you are looking for a cozy fantasy read with excellent romance and worldbuilding, I highly recommend Letters to the Luminous Deep.

A charming fantasy set in an underwater world with magical academia and a heartwarming penpal romance, perfect for fans of A Marvellous Light, Emily Wilde’s Encylopaedia of Faeries and The House in the Cerulean Sea.

“An underwater treasure-chest to be slowly unpacked, full of things I adore: nosy and loving families, epistolary romance, gorgeous worldbuilding, and anxious scholars doing their best to meet the world with kindness and curiosity.” —Freya Marske, author of A Marvellous Light

A beautiful discovery outside the window of her underwater home prompts the reclusive E. to begin a correspondence with renowned scholar Henerey Clel. The letters they share are filled with passion, at first for their mutual interests, and then, inevitably, for each other.

Together, they uncover a mystery from the unknown depths, destined to transform the underwater world they both equally fear and love. But by no mere coincidence, a seaquake destroys E.’s home, and she and Henerey vanish.

A year later, E.’s sister Sophy, and Henerey’s brother Vyerin, are left to solve the mystery, piecing together the letters, sketches and field notes left behind—and learn what their siblings’ disappearance might mean for life as they know it.

Inspired, immersive, and full of heart, this charming epistolary tale is an adventure into the depths of a magical sea and the limits of the imagination from a marvelous debut voice.

  • Maya’s Laws of Love

Maya’s Laws of Love by Alina Khawaja

Maya’s Laws of Love by Alina Khawaja is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance and I believe we’ve featured this on a previous Hide Your Wallet. This is also a road trip romance if that happens to be your catnip.

A bride-to-be convinced she’s cursed in romance finds her luck changing—at exactly the wrong time.

Maya Mirza is so convinced she’s unlucky in love that she’s come up with a list of laws to explain it. Most importantly…
Maya’s Law #1: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

But that’s about to change. Maya’s headed to Pakistan for an arranged marriage with a handsome, successful doctor who ticks all the right boxes. First comes marriage, then comes love—she’s sure of it. Except…
Law #4: When you think you’re lucky, think again.

From the start, Maya’s journey is riddled with disaster, and the cynical lawyer seated next to her on the plane isn’t helping. When a storm leaves them stranded in Switzerland, she and Sarfaraz become unlikely travel companions through bus breakdowns and missed connections.
Law #6: Trips are never smooth sailing.

And before long, Maya’s wondering whether she’s just experienced the ultimate in misfortune—finally meeting the right man a few days before she marries someone else. And Maya might just be the worst person to keep a secret.
Law #18: If you’re overtired, you’ll always spill your guts.

But maybe, if she’s willing to bend some laws, this detour could take her somewhere totally—and wonderfully—unexpected.

  • Syncopation

    Syncopation by Anna Zabo

Syncopation by Anna Zabo is $1.99! This is the first book in the Twisted Wishes series and is a m/m rockstar romance. So many of my friends love this series and it features a romance between aromantic and gay heroes. The third book, Reverb, is high up on my 2020 to-read list.

Twisted Wishes front man Ray Van Zeller is in one hell of a tight spot. After a heated confrontation with his bandmate goes viral, Ray is hit with a PR nightmare the fledgling band so doesn’t need. But his problems only multiply when they snag a talented new drummer—insufferably sexy Zavier Demos, the high school crush Ray barely survived.

Zavier’s kept a casual eye on Twisted Wishes for years, and lately, he likes what he sees. What he doesn’t like is how out of control Ray seems—something Zavier’s aching to correct after their first pulse-pounding encounter. If Ray’s up for the challenge.

Despite the prospect of a glorious sexual encore, Ray is reluctant to trust Zavier with his band—or his heart. And Zavier has always had big dreams; this gig was supposed to be temporary. But touring together has opened their eyes to new passions and new possibilities, making them rethink their commitments, both to the band and to each other.

  • Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match

Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne

RECOMMENDED: Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne is $1.99! Carrie gave this one a B:

If you like offbeat characters and found family, and you don’t mind your books being on the far end of quirky with some doses of hardcore horror mixed with sexy times and whimsy, you’ll enjoy this.

From USA Today bestselling author of The Hating Game Sally Thorne comes something a little unexpected… a historical rom-com that imagines Victor Frankenstein’s sheltered younger sister, and her attempts to create the perfect man.

For generations, every Frankenstein has found their true love and equal, unlocking lifetimes of blissful wedded adventure. Clever, pretty (and odd) Angelika Frankenstein has run out of suitors and fears she may become the exception to this family rule. When assisting in her brother Victor’s ground-breaking experiment to bring a reassembled man back to life, she realizes that having an agreeable gentleman convalescing in the guest suite might be a chance to let a man get to know the real her. For the first time, Angelika embarks upon a project that is all her own.

When her handsome scientific miracle sits up on the lab table, her hopes for an instant romantic connection are thrown into disarray. Her resurrected beau (named Will for the moment) has total amnesia and is solely focused on uncovering his true identity. Trying to ignore their heart-pounding chemistry, Angelika reluctantly joins the investigation into his past, hoping it will bring them closer. But when a second suitor emerges to aid their quest, Angelika wonders if she was too hasty inventing a solution. Perhaps fate is not something that can be influenced in a laboratory? Or is Will (or whatever his name is!) her dream man, tailored for her in every way? And can he survive what was done to him in the name of science, and love?

Filled with carriages, candlesticks, and corpses, Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match is the spooky-season reimagining of the well-known classic that reminds us to never judge a man by his cadaver!

I had fun reading Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match last Halloween season. It’s an unusual novel and I admire Sally Thorne for taking a big swing.

Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide (to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons) by Quenby Olsen is 0.99, as are the following 2 books in the series. I feel like I saw it recd here, but can’t seem to find where. Cozy cozy vibes!

    @Penny

Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide was one of the books listed in the March 17, 2024 posting of “Get Rec’d With Amanda”.

  6. Ely says:

Miss Percy’s Guide was LOVELY, but isn’t for anyone who wants a take-charge kind of heroine. Mildred is like Anne Elliott times 10000, and there were occasions were I had to take a deep breath and just have patience with her a bit. It has all the things you love from a good Jane Austen: very slow burn romance, hideous family members, and terrifyingly competent housekeepers. And also adorable dragons. Strongly recommend. I only read book 1 and I’m embarrassed that I completely forgot about this series, so thanks @Penny!

  7. @Amanda says:

As a note, I use author names in post tags for things like Hide Your Wallet, Books on Sale, and Get Rec’d. If you google “author name smart bitches,” the search results will often take you to a list of posts tagged with that author. The whole URL looks like this: https://smartbitchestrashybooks.com/tag/quenby-olson/

As a shorthand, you can just switch out Quenby’s name with any other author and make sure there are hyphens between first name and last name (and any other initials).
