Cover Awe: Mostly Blues & Greens

Welcome back to Cover Awe!

Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse. The face of a teal blue, feminine figure. Matching tentacles and flowery sea kelp surround their face and emerge from the dark backgruound.

Cover art by John Picacio

Carrie: Oooh that’s a one click right there

Sneezy: WOW!

AND it’s Rebecca Roanhorse!

Shana: I’m obsessed with this cover

Sarah: I hope the artist who worked on this knows we’re all loving everything about it.

Elyse: Tentacles make everything better.

Voice of Command by Melanie Cellier. A brunette woman in a green cloak with the hood pulled up is casting a spell. Blue light swirls out from her right hand and around her body.

Cover design by Karri Klawiter

From Lillian P: I really like this cover.

Elyse: The blue is gorgeous.

Sarah: I love the hood and how she’s looking at the reader.

Rook by William Ritter. Emerging from the bottom left corner is a curl of light green smoke. In the smoke is a woman holding a lantern as she walks through cobblestone streets. The top of the smoke leads to the side profile of a person with a red background.

Cover art by Corey Brickley

Amanda: I’m a sucker for an image within an image.

Shana: The smoke merging with the hair is gorgeous.

Sarah: The tilt of the city scene into the profile of a person is the exact right amount of off-kilter. I love how the profile is pretty still but the image inside is full of movement.

Elyse: This makes me nostalgic for the Gothics from the late 70s and early 80s that I read as a kid.

A Dawn of Onyx by Kate Golden. A dark burgundy backgroudn with muted white and pink florals. Dark iron filigree decorates the top and bottom of the cover with a dark, shining oval jewel on the bottom.

Cover design by Jack Johnson and Katie Anderson

Sarah: Eye candy! Filigree! And queer colors, too.

Amanda: Yes! It definitely signifies “lush and rich” to me.

Sarah: “Lush” is a very good word.

Amanda: It reminds me of the era of erotica/BDSM covers where it’s just a tie or cufflinks to signify wealth.

    so many beautiful colors!

  2. Kolforin says:

The blue is my least favorite part of VOICE — for me it’s the green and orange set in the warm dark background (altho maybe they need the blue for best effect).

ROOK looks like the lighting in a Mario Bava film! That multiple image is giving lots of vibes.

I hate to look ignorant, but what are the queer colors on DAWN? I see mostly gray with some pink.

Melanie Cellier has a great cover designer and all her novels (sweet romantic YA fantasy) have delicious covers. The covers for the Spoken Mage series (Voice of…) are good, but the ones for her others are even prettier, I think.
