Triple Sec
Triple Sec by TJ Alexander is $1.99! This was mentioned in Dahlia’s Queer Romance Round-Up for June. I also remember a few other reviewers on staff being excited about it due to the poly romance.
A jaded bartender is wooed by a charmingly quirky couple in this fresh and sizzling polyamorous rom-com, set in the exclusive world of high-end cocktail bars.
As a bartender at Terror & Virtue, a swanky New York City cocktail lounge known for its romantic atmosphere and Insta-worthy drinks, Mel has witnessed plenty of disastrous dates. That, coupled with her own romantic life being in shambles, has Mel convinced love doesn’t exist.
Everything changes when Bebe walks into the bar. She’s beautiful, funny, knows her whiskeys—and is happily married to her partner, Kade. Mel’s resigned to forget the whole thing, but Bebe makes her a unique since she and Kade have an open marriage, she’s interested in taking Mel on a date.
What starts as a fun romp turns into a burgeoning relationship, and soon Mel is trying all sorts of things she’d been avoiding, from grand romantic gestures to steamy exploits. Mel even gets the self-confidence to enter a cocktail competition that would make her dream of opening her own bar a reality. In the chaotic whirl of all these new experiences, Mel realizes there might be a spark between her and Kade, too. As Bebe, Kade, and Mel explore their connections, Mel begins to think that real love might be more expansive than she ever thought possible.

When Grumpy Met Sunshine
When Grumpy Met Sunshine by Charlotte Stein is $3.99! I know Stein has a lot of fans, especially if you like steamy romances. However, I feel like this one didn’t do as well as I thought it would with readers. Have you read it?
A steamy, opposites-attract romance with undeniable chemistry between a grumpy retired footballer and his fabulous and very sunshine-y ghostwriter.
When grumpy ex-footballer Alfie Harding gets badgered into selling his memoirs, he knows he’s never going to be able to write them. He hates revealing a single thing about himself, is allergic to most emotions, and can’t imagine doing a good job of putting pen to paper.
And so in walks curvy, cheery, cute as heck ghostwriter Mabel Willicker, who knows just how to sunshine and sass her way into getting every little detail out of Alfie. They banter and bicker their way to writing his life story, both of them sure they’ll never be anything other than at odds.
But after their business arrangement is mistaken for a budding romance, the pair have to pretend to be an item for a public who’s ravenous for more of this Cinderella story. Or at least, it feels like it’s pretend—until each slow burn step in their fake relationship sparks a heat neither can control. Now they just have to decide: is this sizzling chemistry just for show? Or something so real it might just give them their fairytale ending?

Air Awakens
Air Awakens by Elise Kova is $1.99! I’ve read one of Kova’s other series and really enjoyed the writing. This is a fantasy series that was picked for a previous Vaginal Fantasy Romance book club. I also appreciate the author’s answer about the levels of romance in this book and the series overall.
A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all–the Crown Prince Aldrik–she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.

Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord
Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord by Celeste Connally is $2.99! This is book one in the Lady Petra Inquiries series. Sarah started listening to this one and said, “The heroine is very unconventional and I love her relationship with her friends.”
Bridgerton meets Agatha Christie in Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord,a dazzling first entry in a captivating new Regency-era mystery series with a feminist spin from Celeste Connally.
London, 1815. Lady Petra Forsyth, daughter of the Earl of Holbrook, has made a shocking proclamation. After losing her beloved fiancé in an accident three years earlier, she announces in front of London’s loosest lips that she will never marry. A woman of independent means—and rather independent ways—Petra sees no reason to cede her wealth and freedom to any man now that the love of her life is gone. Instead, she plans to continue enjoying the best of society without any expectations. But when ballroom gossip suggests that a longtime friend has died of a fit due to her “melancholia” while in the care of a questionable physician, Petra vows to use her status to dig deeper—uncovering a private asylum where men pay to have their wives and daughters locked away, or worse. Just as Petra has reason to believe her friend is alive, a shocking murder proves more danger is afoot than she thought. And the more determined Lady Petra becomes in uncovering the truth, the more her own headstrong actions and desire for independence are used against her, putting her own freedom—and possibly her life—in jeopardy.

So I remember really, REALLY wanting to enjoy When Grumpy Met Sunshine, but it was a persistent case of ‘this could have been done better.’ Every time Mabel and Alfie’s conversation reached a point where it made sense to delve deeper, it veered left into insensible with a quip or joke that was never quite funny enough to tear away from the idea that something else would have been better. It had the potential to be a great forced proximity tale where the relationship got deeper and steamier, but instead Alfie kept bashing about like a bull in a china shop, continually throwing Mabel in the way of the tabloids who would then abuse her as the tabloids do and it just made me cringe each time.
I did thoroughly appreciate Alfie’s kink being enthusiastically consenting women though.
The cover art of the book by Elise Kiva always makes me think that the character has an elbow that bends the wrong way. Ouch!
I enjoyed Triple Sec and definitely felt it got stronger as it went along and the relationships deepened.
The caveat I have, and it’s a little bit my own issues with limited 3rd person. Basically, because we spend the entire time in Mel’s head, we get all her insecurities and pettiness but we don’t necessarily get to see the awesomeness that makes BeBe pursue her initially.
I think your mileage is also going to vary depending on how much you buy/like BeBe’s character – there is some Manic Pixie Poly Lawyer energy.
Overall, if you like TJ Alexander’s work, you won’t be disappointed.
@Kareni, that’s not her elbow? I just assumed she was a praying mantis underneath all the flowing robes. Time for me to back away from the monster romances, I think.
