  • A Letter to the Luminous Deep

A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall

RECOMMENDED: A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvia Cathrall is $2.99! Elyse read this one and gave it an A:

If you are looking for a cozy fantasy read with excellent romance and worldbuilding, I highly recommend Letters to the Luminous Deep.

A charming fantasy set in an underwater world with magical academia and a heartwarming penpal romance, perfect for fans of A Marvellous Light, Emily Wilde’s Encylopaedia of Faeries and The House in the Cerulean Sea.

“An underwater treasure-chest to be slowly unpacked, full of things I adore: nosy and loving families, epistolary romance, gorgeous worldbuilding, and anxious scholars doing their best to meet the world with kindness and curiosity.” —Freya Marske, author of A Marvellous Light

A beautiful discovery outside the window of her underwater home prompts the reclusive E. to begin a correspondence with renowned scholar Henerey Clel. The letters they share are filled with passion, at first for their mutual interests, and then, inevitably, for each other.

Together, they uncover a mystery from the unknown depths, destined to transform the underwater world they both equally fear and love. But by no mere coincidence, a seaquake destroys E.’s home, and she and Henerey vanish.

A year later, E.’s sister Sophy, and Henerey’s brother Vyerin, are left to solve the mystery, piecing together the letters, sketches and field notes left behind—and learn what their siblings’ disappearance might mean for life as they know it.

Inspired, immersive, and full of heart, this charming epistolary tale is an adventure into the depths of a magical sea and the limits of the imagination from a marvelous debut voice.

  • The Honey Witch

The Honey Witch by Sydney Shields

The Honey Witch by Sydney J. Shields is $2.99! I remember a few of us being really excited for this one. The cover also looks beautiful, cozy, and perhaps slightly creepy. Did any of you read this one?

The Honey Witch of Innisfree can never find true love. That is her curse to bear. But when a young woman who doesn’t believe in magic arrives on her island, sparks fly in this deliciously sweet debut novel of magic, hope, and love overcoming all.

Twenty-one-year-old Marigold Claude has always preferred the company of the spirits of the meadow to any of the suitors who’ve tried to woo her. So when her grandmother whisks her away to the family cottage on the tiny Isle of Innisfree with an offer to train her as the next Honey Witch, she accepts immediately. But her newfound magic and independence come with a price: No one can fall in love with the Honey Witch.

When Lottie Burke, a notoriously grumpy skeptic who doesn’t believe in magic, shows up on her doorstep, Marigold can’t resist the challenge to prove to her that magic is real. But soon, Marigold begins to care for Lottie in ways she never expected. And when darker magic awakens and threatens to destroy her home, she must fight for much more than her new home—at the risk of losing her magic and her heart.

  • An Education in Malice

An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson

An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson is $2.99! This was released in February and we mentioned it on Hide Your Wallet. It’s a Sapphic, gothic romance with a dark academia setting.

Sumptuous and addictive, An Education in Malice is a dark academia tale of blood, secrets and insatiable hungers from S.T. Gibson, author of the cult hit A Dowry of Blood

Deep in the forgotten hills of Massachusetts stands Saint Perpetua’s College. Isolated and ancient, it is not a place for timid girls. Here, secrets are currency, ambition is lifeblood, and strange ceremonies welcome students into the fold.

On her first day of class, Laura Sheridan is thrust into an intense academic rivalry with the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla. Together, they are drawn into the confidence of their demanding poetry professor, De Lafontaine, who holds her own dark obsession with Carmilla.

But as their rivalry blossoms into something far more delicious, Laura must confront her own strange hungers. Tangled in a sinister game of politics, bloodthirsty professors and magic, Laura and Carmilla must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice in their ruthless pursuit of knowledge.

  • Bad Dreams in the Night

Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis

Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis is $2.40! This was one of my picks for Hide Your Wallet. Love Ellis’s comics and I even splurged on a signed edition of this one.

Like a graphic novel version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, this collection of original horror tales is packed with urban legends, terrifying twists, and delightfully haunted stories by one of the biggest stars in webcomics. Each story will make you scream for more!

A new take on a classic format, Bad Dreams in the Night is an updated, illustrated take on the horror anthologies the author grew up with as a kid, such as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and In a Dark, Dark Room. These self-contained stories grew rapidly in popularity among the author’s online audience, and even inspired production of a motion picture from Buzzfeed Studios and Lionsgate Films. Filled with spine-tingling, pulse-increasing tales of mystery and supernatural occurrences, this book of never-before-seen comics will be the perfect gift for people who love Black Mirror and Stranger Things and listened to podcasts like Welcome to Nightvale and Rabbits.

The first two have been on my list and I have “The Honey Witch” on hold at the library. I’m going to wait on “A Letter to the Luminous Deep” until the next book is out because I’d read (I think in a review here?) that it does have a cliffhanger ending.

Another sale event, I think through the end of August – #NarratessIndieSale at https://indiebook.sale/

Fantasy, SF and horror by indie authors. Not specifically romance but some romance authors I follow are participating.

    I recommend:

The Dragon Under the Hill by Juniper Butterworth – poly, queer cozy fantasy. It’s the 3rd in a series and idk how standalone it is, but it’s just delightful.

Thornfruit by Felicia Davin – sapphic fantasy. First in a series and it ends on a cliffhanger.

    My GR 4 star review:
Engrossing, original fantasy with a bi heroine. The world building is unusual and excellent. The plot is a little more typical, with a hero’s journey quest. I found myself a bit impatient with the way our two heroines collected helpers who appeared just when they were needed.
