Starling House
Starling House by Alix E. Harrow is $2.99! Sarah and I mentioned this in Hide Your Wallet last October. I think I wound up grabbing it in audio, but am notoriously bad at whittling down my audiobook library.
A grim and gothic new tale from New York Times bestselling author Alix E. Harrow about a small town haunted by secrets that can’t stay buried and the sinister house that sits at the crossroads of it all.
Eden, Kentucky, is just another dying, bad-luck town, known only for the legend of E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth-century author and illustrator who wrote The Underland–and disappeared. Before she vanished, Starling House appeared. But everyone agrees that it’s best to let the uncanny house―and its last lonely heir, Arthur Starling―go to rot.
Opal knows better than to mess with haunted houses or brooding men, but an unexpected job offer might be a chance to get her brother out of Eden. Too quickly, though, Starling House starts to feel dangerously like something she’s never had: a home.
As sinister forces converge on Starling House, Opal and Arthur are going to have to make a dire to dig up the buried secrets of the past and confront their own fears, or let Eden be taken over by literal nightmares.
If Opal wants a home, she’ll have to fight for it.

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon
RECOMMENDED: That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming is $2.99! I love the new covers! Carrie recently reviewed this one and gave it a B:
This book was perfect entertainment for my stressed out brain, and I was definitely rooting for those two wacky kids to have their HEA.
Spice trader Cinnamon’s quiet life is turned upside down when she ends up on a quest with a fiery demon, in this irreverently quirky rom-com fantasy that is sweet, steamy, and funny as hell.
All she wanted to do was live her life in peace—maybe get a cat, expand the family spice farm. Really, anything that didn’t involve going on an adventure where an orc might rip her face off. But they say the goddess has favorites, and if so, Cin is clearly not one of them.
After Cin saves the demon Fallon in a wine-drunk stupor, Fallon reveals that all he really wants to do is kill an evil witch enslaving his people. And who can blame him? But now he’s dragging Cinnamon along for the ride whether she likes it or not. On the bright side, at least he keeps burning off his shirt.…

Half a Soul
Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater is $2.99! This is book one in the Regency Faerie Tales series and subsequent books in the series were listed in latest Hide Your Wallet. There’s another YA vs. Adult debate for this one as well. I believe there is no sexual content in this one.
“Whimsical, witty, and brimming over with charm” (India Holton), Olivia Atwater’s delightful debut will transport you to a magical version of Regency England, where the only thing more meddlesome than a fairy is a marriage-minded mother!
It’s difficult to find a husband in Regency England when you’re a young lady with only half a soul.
Ever since she was cursed by a faerie, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear or embarrassment—an unfortunate condition that leaves her prone to accidental scandal. Dora hopes to be a quiet, sensible wallflower during the London Season—but when Elias Wilder, the strange, handsome, and utterly ill-mannered Lord Sorcier, discovers her condition, she is instead drawn into peculiar and dangerous faerie affairs.
If her reputation can survive both her curse and her sudden connection with the least-liked man in all high society, then she and her family may yet reclaim their normal place in the world. But the longer Dora spends with Elias, the more she begins to suspect that one may indeed fall in love even with only half a soul.

I LOVED Knockout but strongly recommend reading the earlier books in the series, or even just Bombshell (book 1) first.
Loved Starling House and Half a Soul. There isn’t any sexual content in HaS, except some remarks. Trying to think of a comp…maybe a little like Robin McKinley? Anyway, really enjoyed it.
Starling House is very lush, atmospheric. Good balance of horror and romance. Has a YA vibe even though characters are mid20s IIRC.
I really liked Starling House — it’s very well-written and Gothic and so evocative! And scary at times.
FLOWERHEART by Catherine Bakewell is $2.99 on kindle. I have no idea if I’ll like it, but a GR friend did—and the reason I have GR friends is to spy on their bookshelves! So, a heads up but I take no responsibility for this mention?
Anyone have any opinions on FLOWERHEART?
$.99:
– Medley by Layla Reyne (Competitive swimmers, m/m)
$1.99:
– Thorn (Dauntless Path 1) by Intisar Khanani
“That Time I Got Drunk…” is deeply silly and very self aware and a lot of fun. I recommend it
Wow, 3/4 of these are books I want to read! (And Starling House might be — its description doesn’t grab me but I do like spooky stuff.) But I missed the sale on Yeeted, already have Half A Soul (planning to finally read it this summer), and need to read Bombshell (which I already have) before Knockout).
Also, this is a solid set of covers!
Aah, why did I change “Drunk” to “Yeeted”? That’s not the right book, and I’m not even drunk!
I JUST finished reading Half a Soul and I LOVED it. Was a very well spent Saturday morning in bed – whimsical, hopeful but acknowledging life’s hardships, really really great MCs. Highly recommend!
