  • Killers of a Certain Age

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn

RECOMMENDED: Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Rayborn is $1.99! I don’t think this one has been on sale on the site before and we don’t have a review, but Sarah did some squeeing on a podcast episode.

Older women often feel invisible, but sometimes that’s their secret weapon.

They’ve spent their lives as the deadliest assassins in a clandestine international organization, but now that they’re sixty years old, four women friends can’t just retire – it’s kill or be killed in this action-packed thriller by New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-nominated author Deanna Raybourn.

Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for forty years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills.

When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they’ve been marked for death.

Now to get out alive they have to turn against their own organization, relying on experience and each other to get the job done, knowing that working together is the secret to their survival. They’re about to teach the Board what it really means to be a woman—and a killer—of a certain age.

  • The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies

The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies by Alison Goodman

RECCOMENDED: The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies by Alison Goodman is 1.99! Lara previously squeed about this one:

Honestly, writing this review has been so challenging, because I just want to scream ‘nuance’, ‘depth’ and ‘originality’.

Oh, and most of all, ‘Please read it so I can talk to you about it!’

A high society amateur detective at the heart of Regency London uses her wits and invisibility as an ‘old maid’ to protect other women in a new and fiercely feminist historical mystery series from New York Times bestselling author Alison Goodman.

Lady Augusta Colebrook, “Gus,” is determinedly unmarried, bored by society life, and tired of being dismissed at the age of forty-two. She and her twin sister, Julia, who is grieving her dead betrothed, need a distraction. One soon presents itself: to rescue their friend’s goddaughter, Caroline, from her violent husband.

The sisters set out to Caroline’s country estate with a plan, but their carriage is accosted by a highwayman. In the scuffle, Gus accidentally shoots and injures the ruffian, only to discover he is Lord Evan Belford, an acquaintance from their past who was charged with murder and exiled to Australia twenty years ago. What follows is a high adventure full of danger, clever improvisation, heart-racing near misses, and a little help from a revived and rather charming Lord Evan.

Back in London, Gus can’t stop thinking about her unlikely (not to mention handsome) comrade-in-arms. She is convinced Lord Evan was falsely accused of murder, and she is going to prove it. She persuades Julia to join her in a quest to help Lord Evan, and others in need—society be damned! And so begins the beguiling secret life and adventures of the Colebrook twins.

A rollicking and joyous adventure, with a beautiful love story at its heart, about two rebellious sisters forging their own path in Regency London

  • Divine Rivals

    Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross is $1.99! I mentioned this on a previous Hide Your Wallet. The concept of a fantasy setting with rival journalists really interested me. However, this one is YA or perhaps New Adult.

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish―into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

Shadow and Bone meets Lore in this epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

  • The Windham Brides: Books 1-3

The Windham Brides: Books 1-3 by Grace Burrowes

The Windham Brides Boxed Set by Grace Burrowes is $2.99! This set collects the first three books in this historical romance series. I want to say at least one of these has been reviewed, but I can’t remember. Have you read any of these?

The first three books in this New York Times bestselling Regency romance series are now in a special collection perfect for binging and hailed as “terrific” by Bridgerton author Julia Quinn.

    THE TROUBLE WITH DUKES:
They call him the Duke of Murder. The gossips whisper that the new Duke of Murdoch is a brute, a murderer, and even worse–a Scot. They say he should never be trusted alone with a woman. But Megan Windham sees in Hamish something different, someone different.

    TOO SCOT TO HANDLE
As a captain in the army, Colin MacHugh led men, fixed what was broken, and fought hard. Now that he’s a titled gentleman, he’s still fighting — this time to keep his bachelorhood safe from all the marriage-minded debutantes. Then he meets the intriguing Miss Anwen Windham. Anwen is amazed at how quickly Lord Colin takes in hand a pack of rambunctious orphan boys. Amazed at the thrill she gets from the rumble of his Scottish burr and the heat of his touch. But she doesn’t know Colin has enemies who will stop at nothing to ruin him and anybody he holds dear.

    NO OTHER DUKE WILL DO
Julian St. David, Duke of Haverford, has a long-term plan to restore the family finances, but his sister has a much faster solution: host a house party for London’s single young ladies and find Julian a wealthy bride. Elizabeth Windham has no interest in marriage, but a recent scandal has forced her hand. As the two spend more time together, their attraction is overwhelming, unexpected… and absolutely impossible. With meddling siblings, the threat of financial ruin, and gossips lurking behind every potted palm, will they find true love or true disaster?

Ooh, just to say, I loved KILLERS OF A CERTAIN AGE. Hit the sweet spot for me!

My review–Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn is an absolute delight. It’s an ode to female power, to the underestimation of women’s wisdom and expertise and effectiveness just as they’re reaching the age where they’re the most so, wrapped up in a bit of a spy heist… It’s a gleeful, joyful “Take THAT!” to all those who dare to underestimate and overlook and dismiss women, especially those beyond a certain age…. Ten out of ten. Would read again!

  2. Kareni says:

I second the recommendation for the first two books. I enjoyed them both.

  3. Kareni says:

Jackie North’s male/male time travel romances are on sale today for 99¢ in the US. I picked up the two I haven’t already read.

  4. Penny says:

I liked KILLERS OF A CERTAIN AGE, but maybe because everyone was gushing so much about it, I had preconceived notions about it that it didn’t match. Definitely worth a read! But the level of excitement over representation of older women in a different context kind of inflated expectations around what was for me (totally only my own experience I’m sharing here) a fun but not spectacular read. Get it for sure! But maybe try to go into it without too many set ideas of what it will be??

  5. Lisa F says:

The first two are fantastic; I’m side-eyeing the plot for Divine Rivals because really, who does that? Most of the Burrows in that set were good, too!

  6. Darlynne says:

@Penny: That was my take also. The book was OK, not spectacular, still glad I read it.

  7. Neile says:

Big fan of the Goodman. I also really enjoyed DIVINE RIVALS, but heads up that it’s the first half of a duology. A really good duology, but you’re also going to want to read RUTHLESS VOWS, too. That said, I snapped this one up after reading it in Kindle Unlimited and have started tracking down more of Rebecca Ross’s books.

  8. marjorie says:

So agree with Penny! I really enjoyed KILLERS OF A CERTAIN AGE, but my expectations were sky-high and it didn’t quite live up to them. I still super-enjoyed and recommend it.

  9. Mary says:

Killers of a Certain age was wonderful. One of my best reads for 2023! So happy it is on sale!

  10. Cicely says:
