To Catch a Raven

To Catch a Raven by Beverly Jenkins is $1.99! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and I believe is the latest book in the Women Who Dare series. Do you have a favorite book in the series?
The newest novel in USA Today bestselling author Beverly Jenkins’s compelling Women Who Dare series features a fearless grifter who goes undercover to reclaim the stolen Declaration of Independence.
Lying and cheating may be sins to some people, but for Raven Moreaux, it is a way of life. She comes from a long line of grifters and couldn’t be prouder…Until she’s forced to help the government.
A former Confederate official is suspected of stealing the Declaration of Independence, and Raven, posing as his housekeeper, is tasked with getting it back. Her partner is the too handsome Braxton Steel. Masquerading as a valet/driver, Brax is also supposed to be her “husband.” He has his own reasons for doing this job, but when their pretend marriage ignites into fiery passion, they’ll have to put everything—including their hearts—on the line.

PODCAST RECOMMENDED: A Lady’s Code of Misconduct by Meredith Duran is $1.99! This historical romance was recommended on a podcast episode with Sarah, Elyse, and Karen of the Knit One, Geek Two podcast. Karen mentioned that she’s a sucker for amnesia stories and this one has an amnesiac hero. Have you read this one?
The next steamy historical romance in USA TODAY bestselling and RITA award-winning author Meredith Duran’s “wonderfully indulgent” (Publishers Weekly) Rules for the Reckless series.
A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL…
Trapped in the countryside, facing an unwanted marriage and the theft of her fortune, Jane Mason is done behaving nicely. To win her freedom, she’ll strike a deal with the most dangerous man she knows—a rising star in politics, whose dark good looks mask an even darker heart.…NEVER GOES TO PLAN.
The bitter past has taught Crispin Burke to trust no one. He’ll gladly help a lovely young heiress, provided she pays a price. Yet when a single mistake shatters his life, it is Jane who holds the key to his salvation. And in a world that no longer makes sense, Crispin slowly realizes that she may be the only thing worth fighting for…Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

The Truth About Love and Dukes by Laura Lee Guhrke is $1.99! This is the first book in the Dear Lady Truelove series and the heroine runs an advice column. Readers seem divided on the heroine. Some found her independent and confident, while others found her too brash for their liking.
Dear Lady Truelove . . . I have fallen in love, truly and completely in love, for the first time. The man whom I hold in such passionate regard, however, is not of my station. He is a painter, a brilliant artist. Needless to say, my family would not approve . . .
Henry, Duke of Torquil, wouldn’t be caught reading the wildly popular “Dear Lady Truelove” column, but when its advice causes his mother to embark on a scandalous elopement, an outraged Henry decides the author of this tripe must be stopped before she can ruin any more lives. Though Lady Truelove’s identity is a closely guarded secret, Henry has reason to suspect the publisher of the notorious column, beautiful and provoking Irene Deverill, is also its author.
For Irene, it’s easy to advise others to surrender to passion, but when she meets the Duke of Torquil, she soon learns that passion comes at a price. When one impulsive, spur-of-the-moment kiss pulls her into a scorching affair with Henry, it could destroy her beloved newspaper, her career, and her independence. But in the duke’s arms, surrender is so, so sweet . . .

When a Duke Loves a Woman by Lorraine Heath is $1.99! This is the second book in the Sins for All Seasons series, though I believe it can be read on its own. Some readers found this one to be a charming and funny historical. However, others felt the plot was a bit farfetched.
Gillie Trewlove knows what a stranger’s kindness can mean, having been abandoned on a doorstep as a baby and raised by the woman who found her there. So, when suddenly faced with a soul in need at her door—or the alleyway by her tavern—Gillie doesn’t hesitate. But he’s no infant. He’s a grievously injured, distractingly handsome gentleman who doesn’t belong in Whitechapel, much less recuperating in Gillie’s bed.
Being left at the altar is humiliating; being rescued from thugs by a woman—albeit a brave and beautiful one—is the pièce de résistance to the Duke of Thornley’s extraordinarily bad day. After nursing him back from the brink, Gillie agrees to help him comb London’s darker corners for his wayward bride. But every moment together is edged with desire and has Thorne rethinking his choice of wife. Yet Gillie knows the aristocracy would never accept a duchess born in sin. Thorne, however, is determined to prove to her that no obstacle is insurmountable when a duke loves a woman.

Just FYI, today is the special Queer Your Bookshelf promotion, with titles reduced to $.99 and $1.99:
https://queeryourbookshelf.com/
A few favorite authors include Annabeth Albert, Beth Bolden, Brigham Vaughn, Sarah Honey, Layla Reyne, Amy Aislin…
I think this is the first time I want ALL of the featured books on sale!
For anyone who likes non-fiction, Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon. I have not read it yet, but I did read a few interviews Wilkerson gave for her more recent book, Caste, and she is an excellent researcher and story-teller. This sounds like a great price for an important work, especially for Black History Month.
I’m enjoying Lorraine Heath’s Sins for all Season’s series, and When a Duke Loves a Woman was no exception. But I also agree the resolution was hard to buy. My favorite thus far (I’ve read four so far), and I really loved it, was the first book, Beyond Scandal and Desire.

I managed to glance through the Queer Your Bookshelf promotion (which was like trying to drink from a firehose—I lost a layer of skin from my lips yet am still thirsty) and saw one book I can recommend: AJ Sherwood & Jocelynn Drake’s first dragon book ORIGIN. It’s not my favorite series of Sherwood’s, but it’s plenty entertaining anyway. M/M dragon/mage romance, wounded hero…
I have a few recommendations for the Queer your bookshelf event. These are all books I’ve read and enjoyed.
Edge of Nowhere by Felicia Davin – 4.5 stars
Near future, dystopian m/m romance. The world building is excellent. The romance is very compelling. I was completely caught up in the story. There were a couple plot holes but I didn’t really care. Note, this is a series but it’s not a cliffhanger ending.
Bewitched: Being a history of affection, enchantment, and housecleaning by Juniper Butterworth – 4 stars
This series was one of my favorite discoveries of 2023 – cozy fantasy / goblin-core sapphic romance series that I didn’t know I needed. This book includes ace protagonists and cranky introverts.
The Home I Find With You by Skye Kilaen – 4 stars – B/B+
Immersive, compelling queer/bi/poly mm romance in a unexpectedly hopeful post-apocalyptic world, set 12 years after the end of the 2nd American Civil War and the collapse of life as it used to be. The author calls this hope-punk and that seems like as good a term as any.
I loved the messy protagonists and their emotional journeys. I was completely swept away while I was reading it but when I put down the book I noticed a few holes in the plot and world building.
Thornfruit by Felicia Davin – 4 stars
Engrossing, original fantasy with a bi heroine. The world building is unusual and excellent. The plot is a little more typical, with a hero’s journey quest. I found myself a bit impatient with the way our two heroines collected helpers who appeared just when they were needed.
Note that this is part of a (finished) trilogy and it ends on a cliffhanger. The series is poly F/F/X but most of this book is F/F. I recommend the whole series.
(I believe that all of the above authors are some flavor of LGBTQ+)
And a few more Queer your bookshelf recs:
How to Get a Girlfriend (When You’re a Terrifying Monster) by Marie Cardno – 4 stars
Cute, cozy fantasy sapphic romance that delivers pretty much exactly what the title and cover promise. It’s not super deep but it’s a lot of fun.
Trillin, the terrifying monster, is a Lovecraftian type eldritch horror that used to be part of The Endless and now just wants to stay a separate being and create a body with cool tentacles that (mostly) stays solid and lets her get to know Sian, the attractive and impulsive human witch / grad student conducting research on the Endless void. Hijinks ensue.
Strength Check (Dungeons and Dating #1) by Katherine McIntyre
I haven’t read this f/f contemporary set in bookstore / game shop, but I’ve a couple others in the series and enjoyed them. I like that the series has a range of pairings.
$.99:
– The Prospector’s Only Prospect by Dani Collins
Adding to the Queer your bookshelf recs:
Agree with @ReadKnitSnark about Origin by AJ Sherwood and Jocelynn Drake
I would also add Stalked by Shadows by Lissa Kasey
And authors I have liked that are on the list who have not been mentioned yet are Lily Morton, K.L. Noone, and Jennifer Cody
Thank you @cleo and @drewbird! I grabbed a few interesting titles because you brought them to my attention. (So much easier to drink from a bucket than a firehose.)
An “I liked it” from the bitchery is always worth paying attention to.
And @flchen1, I so appreciate that you keep us updated on all the deals…all the time!
I so agree, @ReadKnitSnark–I so appreciate the thoughts of the B*tchery, and my reading is so much richer for it (though maybe not my pocketbook, LOL). And you’re so welcome–happy to share any deal news when I can!
